Hello.

I'm currently selling my inordinately loud and brilliant TVR, but looking to replace it immediately or do some sort of swap or part exchange and 'ting.

But I have decided that I want something comfortable and with a bit of luxury, as I don't think it's possible to get anything more fire-snorty and fun for the same kind of cash... so why bother?!

Anyway. Thusly. Etc.

I obviously want the wind in my beard.

And I've NEVER owned a BMW - so I decided I would get an M3...

Then I realised that I would have to spend much more than £5500 AND recieve service-bumming as part of the process.

So I went back to looking at 330 cabs.

I figured it might make a kind of halfway little cruiser for the summer that wouldn't be a hassle to run about like a real car, on roads... and things, you know - things!

So.

Tell me everything about them.

EvAr.

Please.

Having owned 6 BMW's in my 22 years of driving (and I kid you not over 60 cars in total!!)this reminds me of my BMW E36 M3 convertible about 10 years ago. Loved it, awesome car, sounded amazing with a really high pitch when you give it some beans. I had the 3 litre model (286bhp) and not the 3.2 EVO model. I was told to stay clear of the EVO's...something to do with potential problems with the VANOS ?
I had an 'L' reg which was a Launch model. It had an electric roof and also air conditioning !!! Very rare apparently.
It handled brilliantly too unlike my 390 wedge. What a car it was smile
You can pick up a lovely E36 M3 convertible for £5500, just look at fleabay and Autotrader etc.
If you drive them sensibly you will get 20-25mpg too !
But they may be too old fashioned for you ?
I have an old 330d at the moment, brilliant engine. It's done 155k miles and still drives like new.

Unless you have a huge fuel bill budget stay clear of the E46 M3's though, they can do as little as 10 mpg !

Anyway I digress as you asked about a BMW 330 cab, yes you can pick one up now for £5500. Nice.

Just had a thought too, have you considered a Merc 500 SL convertible ? My brother hired one years ago to impress his new girlfriend at the time (obviously did not work though as he married someone else) and I was insured to drive it. Well, with a 5 litre V8 and being in my 20's at the time you can imagine the fun I had in that. Downside is though, it was very thirsty. The kickdown was outrageous, it flew smile
As I am a complete petrol head and as I have said owned nigh on 60 cars in 22 years of driving just let me know what cars you are interested in as the chances are I have owned/driven it smile
How is your back now by the way ?
Regards
Ian

Oooh... as my daily driver is a 35 year old SAAB 900 Ti16 I am DEFINITELY not adverse to the older cars...!

60 cars in 22 years is good, but I think I'm over 100 in 18 hehe

Mercs... hmmm.......... I need convincing!

Good man, I guess you get very very bored with cars very quickly biggrin
I thought I was bad..........

What do you think of the M3 ?

RE: Mercs, had 2 of them, a c230k sport and a e280. The c230k was brilliant (2.3 supercharged and all that) but both were very thirsty eek

(TVR)

Maston, I love those old M3s !

I think I will try to ween myself away to E46 330 though.,... frown

The 330i is a fine car, great sounding and a nice mix of performance / economy. Preferred the noise to that of my E46 M3 at sane speeds. Watch out for suspension / bushes at this age, but a well serviced engine will do 200k easily.

From your original post I would stick to the 330 if you can accept that in no way is it a sports car. It is a silky smooth cruiser with enough power to have a bit of fun whilst listening to a modest but classy soundtrack. The E36 M3 and 330i are like chalk and cheese to be fair, totally different experiences.

I have owned 3 x E36 M3's and currently have an Evo coupe track car. The cab was my least favourite due to the fact that it didnt handle anywhere near as well as the others (as to be expected) and cost me over 6K in repairs in the 12 months that I had it. That said, they do look great with the roof down smile Buying the wrong e36 M3 can be financial suicide too and it will be a lot harder to find a good one than a decent 330.

Given the choice I would buy an E36 M3 over the 330 but I do have a love for the older M cars, the rawness and the zing.
