gearbox is very strong so thats a myth... its the electronics thats the issue, if a sensor goes BMW charge the earth to locate and fix it.
Running costs are high, tyres, brakes etc, clutch is quite consumable and is main reason it has a bad name re the gearbox... its over 2k to replace by dealer or 1.3k from indy.
The car tells you via the idrive when next things need to be done ie pads, oil, inspection etc etc... make sure nothing is due soon or price accordingly. gearbox is a little clunky in auto mode but in manual mode should be smooth to pull away without judder and change gear smoothly.
check ever single bit of electronics to make sure it works and make sure it has a service history... but that general for any car you buy
Oh and make sure you rev the engine to over 8000rpm in P500 mode on the test drive... just because you have to hear that engine sing
