OK, so you buy a (12 month) tax disc on the 1st/2nd/3rd January it will expire on 31st December.

If you buy a tax disc on the 31st January, it will expire 31st January (the following year)

When, in the month, is the cut-off/changeover?

If you buy online it automatically carries on from the previous one.

If you buy over the post office you can buy for the following month in the last 2 days of the current month.

If you've had a car on SORN I dont know, I recall falling foul of that and writing to the DVLA, if you buy online in the last two days of the month when coming off SORN you get a disc back dated to the begining of the month, so yuo pay for 6 months but infact get only five, plus a couple of days, IYSWIM.

All that jazz

If your tax is out at the end of this month, you can purchase your next 6/12 months up to 2 weeks before the end of the month, but the vehicle must already be taxed.

Thanks, yes, the query related to coming off SORN (and getting the best value for money!)

If you're coming off SORN then the tax disc will start on the 1st of the month from when you request it. So if you applied today and gave today's date as the start date, then it'll run from 1 Feb. However if you apply today and give Thursday's date (1 March) as the start date, then it'll run from 1 March. But don't risk using the car before 1 March otherwise if you get ANPR'd in the interim they'll crush your car. HTH

Thanks, some useful info there (but also a bit of melodrama - they don't immediately crush your car in the first instance for being untaxed/failure to display)
