Hi all, just wanted to pick some brains as to weather or not its straightforward to swap a auto box for a manual one? I have fancied a hilux surf/4 runner for some time but would much prefer a manual, these are not as common as the auto's and seem to fetch a premium, however a few autos have cropped up locally at good prices and got me thinking, obviously a box and peddle box would be needed, has anyone done this swap before or could shed some light on any difficulties?
cheers all

I've never converted a Hilux but I've done plenty of other 4x4s and cars.

When doing conversions like these, it's always handy to have access to the other vehicle you're robbing parts from. It's not so much the big bits like torque converter/flywheel/gearbox etc. it's more the small fiddly bits like bolts and screws, pieces of interior trim. You never know exactly what parts you will need until you get stuck in.

What are your reasons for swapping the box over??

The auto box on my Gen 3 is great, and it just keeps working with regular part oil changes every big oil change. Tows my car transporter trailer brilliant. The only criticism there is the overdrive that kicks in at 52mph, specially when towing but it can be turned off at the press of a button. If MPG is a consideration there isn't a huge difference either in the real world between the two, and they aren't the most economical 4x4 anyway whether auto or manual.

Equally i'd rather use that off road (and i have done recently on my outlaws farm in Scotland just this weekend gone), and with it's effortless 4x4H and 4x4L i think it's as good as any manual. There's no clutch to burn out when it's slipping from getting soaked or muddy or when stuck up to the eyeballs. Looked after these boxes are pretty bullet proof. My bro in law just bought himself a brand new Hilux invincible, manual, and he loves my autobox around the farm.

The only mod for my autobox i haven't done is bypassed the gearbox oil cooler in the radiator for an external oil cooler. They are known to leak inside the rad and fill the autobox with water. Easy and cheap enough though to get another box and replace if it does happen.
