Ok, so people typically get a bit upset when there are forum posts mentioning that Audi drivers are cocks, Honda drivers are old and Subaru drivers are chavs, but is there any truth in these oft touted stereotypes?

Are certain types of people attracted to certain brands or styles of car? Are you one of the people who disagrees with a mooted stereotype about your vehicle? Why? Is there anyone with a Mitsubishi Warrior that doesn't have hairy knuckles and a double-digit IQ?

The stereotypes have to come from somewhere, surely?

There are exceptions to every rule, but many stereotypes (car related or otherwise) exist because they're true.

So, in essence, your theory is correct; if enough of (us) hold a particular view, it becomes a stereotype.

The fact that the three examples you quote above are universally known to be the truth may just be coincidence though!

I know of 2 people with Mitsubishi Warriors and they are both moderately intelligent people, with follicle-free hands.... they do both have "small man syndrome" though (ie: they are about 5 foot 5-7 and sensitive about it).

So given that my stereotypical driver is different to yours for the same vehicle, i'd say it was bks.

Having said that, I do drive a BMW and i am a

It's dangerous to stereotype people.

Several of my friends drive Audis, for example, and they seem perfectly normal.

However, some of the most dangerous, offensive and aggressive driving I've seen in recent years seems to be carried out by Audi drivers, usually TDIs.

Maybe it's a popular choice as a company car, who knows?

I'm a massive fan of Toyota Glanza's, with the right bits done they can be really good fast road/track cars, off boost they are as economic as a 1.3.

Mine had all mods declared on the insurance and I'm well educated in a well paid job.

The usual stereotype is a little thieving scrote with nothing declared on insurance. Which does happen far too much lol

I had one briefly at age 20 frown (although to be fair, I was given it for free smile).

Based on my own observations (and going with some casual stereotyping) and a motorcyclist will never pull away from traffic lights at normal speeds, but proceed to scream off down the road near enough flat out.. every time.. without fail..

woman in her 30s here at work owns one

it's about a year old, every panel bashed

now she might fit another stereotype, about drivers, particularly female ones from a certain sub-continent

Any modified car gets a bad stereotype to be honest. I get some odd looks if I take my golf to work, 4 point harnesses over my shirt!

and then you get the kids that want to race rolleyes. or the angry guys who want to show up what they clearly think is a 1.6 driver made to look fast rolleyes.

I'm an arrogant idiot who thinks that because I drive THE ULTIMATE DRIVING MACHINE that I'm significantly better than you. I also refuse to indicate and take any overtaking manouver as a slight to my manhood. Such things will be dealt with by me making you eat my dust.

Stereotypes are silly, I'm not your average BMW driver.

A friend of mine from college is a high class escort (no I don't have any photos) and she has a Honda Jazz, so there's always an exception to the rule but stereotypes are just not very scientifically researched ownership demographics, manufacturers Market their cars in a certain way which attracts certain types of people.

Most of us are enthusiasts who are interested performance/handling and not image hence instances of Puma/MX-5 ownership on here are high. Cars perceived by most of the public to be girly or appealing to women.
