Folks,

Doing some man maths, I currently spend £458 / month on fuel. If I change to something that returns around 40mpg average, I will be able to make a net £0 change (excluding depreciation).

Any thoughts on what might be reasonably quick, reasonably comfortable and return c.40 to the gallon.

Budget will be about £15k

Half that on a decent efficient dynamics 120d would give a decent drive and 50+mpg

Have you looked into this at all your self??

Whats your commute like?

BMW 330D Can scrape 40mpg average.

The latest Golf GTD certainly can.

2008> Saab 93 Aero TTID 180 will also do 40mpg and certainly the odd ball choice. You shoud get quite a bit of change from yur £15k too.

It can be up to 6 years old.

I need 4 seats and the usual gubbins (leather, nav, aircon). Doesn't have to be massive. I was considering a 135i not too long ago (although that doesn't fall into the mpg requirements).

I do around 20k / year, so am right on the cusp of diesel being more attractive.

The increased servicing price of a diesel isn't really an issue, as my current car costs a bit to service (especially when all 16 spark plugs need to be changed yikes )

Better edit my profile, as we swapped that for Toerag for my wife.

I currently run a W208 CLK 500

BMW 320d ED would be a similar size to your current car, they have tall gearing for motorways and 177hp. If this is too slow sacrifice some mpg for bhp and look towards a 231hp 330d.

Failing that, Golf GTD for a 5door hatch, or if you can sacrifice some space and the rear seats won't be used often a 123d Coupe.

I like these for the money, it's not going to be the best option in the way of economy but you might scrap 40 on the motorway. smile
