Saw these two adverts today. It seems more and more that the quality or advantages of one model over another are no longer what's used to sell a car. It's all about presenting an image. Ok, so that's nothing new, but these two I found particularly stupid.

One for a small average hatchbak, strapline

"You are now leaving Dullsville."

Seriously? They think that a nondescript and totally average little French car is the way to escape dull? A Jaguar E Type is not dull. An Atom is not dull. A Lamborghini Murchiallargo is not dull. A Renault hatchback with a weedy engine very much is dull however, no matter how big you make the writing proclaiming it not to be.

The other is for the Jaguar XF which they've put a smaller diesel in (I think), with a corresponding drop in price to just under £30K. Strapline:

"The smart money knows when to buy"

I see. So what Jaguar are telling the world is that every single one of their Jaguar XF purchasers to date is stupid. After all, he/she bought before the prices came down, which, according to them, is when smart people should buy this car.

Can cars no longer be promoted on their merits? Or is it solely about what the ad execs tell the sheep these days?
