Well, I decided to sell my CLS and replace it with something more economical ( did 37000 miles last year) and it averages about 32 to the gallon ... but Mrs E has decided she wants it and I can sell her golf http://www.pistonheads.com/sales/3689069.htm

I am looking to spend about 10k - my mileage kills cars on depreciation so not bothered for anything too flash or fast just something that will give me 50 ish mpg ( that will save me £3000 a year )

Any ideas or anybody looking to Part ex such a car?

Cheers

most modern boggo 2litre diesels should easily be able to do this. My mum has a citroen C4 1.6D and that averages about 60mpg with over 70mpg on long steady motorway runs. It actually feels a lot more spritely than my dads 2.0D 2005 Vectra. I wouldnt recomend the C4 for build quality, but my dads vectra has been owned since 10k miles (now has 130k) has only sprung up 2 surprises (spring collapse and brake pipe rust). that has averaged about 54mpg over entire ownership.

You really want something with a solid reliability.
My bet would be to go fot something that was designed to be a company car/repmobile.

One of my favourite of the current bunch, and hilariously good value, is the Seat Exeo (preferably the estate).
It is basically an Audi A4 with Seat badges on, so it should be very reliable and well nailed together. Perfect for a long haul, mid size vehicle.

The same car in different guises (note the engine deifference)

The VAG 2.0 Tdi will easily get 50mpg+ on a run. Hell the old pd tdi in my sisters A3 managed high 40's around town an 50+ on the motorway. I was given a mk6 golf with the 140bhp version of the 2.0 tdi as a courtesy car recently and it managed 40's whilst driving "spiritedly" on countryside roads. The Seat that slomax linked to looks like good value for money, even if it is the previous shape a4 but just with a seat badge instead.

There seems to be a Passat Highline model which offers pretty good value for money - 110 & 140 BHp versions for about £12K upwards on 30000 miles & 3 years old - similar pricing to the Seat above. It's got leather, climate, etc and it's probably where I'd spend the money right now. (The bluemotions are coming through at a similar price if you prefer frugality over comfort & performance)

Smart Roadster, my colleague has one and averages close to 60mpg on the Sheffield to Leeds M1 commute. Very cheap to maintain and virtually all depreciation gone from them now.

Cheers fellas - VW / Audi etc seem to be falling behind the ford and vauxhall offerings on MPG from what I have seen ... I would prefer the VW offering golf 2.0 tdi but floss the sheep they are expensive

Surely the build quality from VW makes up for a few less MPG compared to Ford and Vauxhall? I had a new shape Astra for a few days after the golf, and the interior was terrible. Plus your moving from a CLS which I assume had a decent interior

I have a 520d and it's superb as a company hack and can easily do 50mpg. Mine does 38 mpg as it spends most time in 8th at 2500 rpm, which is not the most economical way to drive.

Didn't realise the F10's had 8 speed auto boxes. Pity they are just out of budget for the op though tongue out

I think we are going to go for fiesta Zetec S Tdci - cheap as chips to run and look pretty smart - just hope we dont come across any hills .. its a little on the slow side.

We have 3 diesels in our 'fleet' incl a PD130 in the A4 and a PD170 in the Leon. The Audi is currently on 133k miles and apart from routine maintenance has not missed a beat. We have had the Seat nearly a year and although not unreliable by any stretch we have already had all 4 x injectors replaced (thankfully under warranty) but things like the DPF / DMF etc are starting to niggle. I don't have the same level of confidence in the reliability of the 'more modern' diesel engines to be honest and actually wish we'd gone petrol this time.

If I was in your shoes I'd be looking for something VAG but fitted with the PD130 lump and you will have lots of change from your budget... smile
