Why not install a manaullly operated fan switch? Easy to do and a lot more re-assuring. I used a section on the swith panel utilising an old fog light switch to switch the fan off and on when I need to. I also wired in a Red LED to indicate all is working well. Does the business IMO...

Far too dangerous. I like driving the car...but can't trust myself to keep an eye on the temp all the time (I need a bit of help from automation for that). I may well add one as well as the otter for heavy traffic, but I do want peace of mind and believe the switch to be a good idea.
I'm thinking around 75-80 degrees should work ??

During normal driving the fan is not required. It needs to come on only to cool it back down, mine kicks in at 94-95 degrees and that is ok. Brings the temperature down to about 88 degrees. Below 85 is not required as it is too cool. The engine operating temperature is around that and up to 90 degrees. Temperatures are readings from the wedge temp gauge, so are probably different on each car, but they seem fairly accurate on mine.

Have an override switch that I use when hitting heavy traffic for a longer time or some serious driving is intended. Prefer the last situation of course.

I reckon the same, smile

To follow the whole nine yards of what/why/how one reaches the same conclusion, ie "what is the right temperature for my engine" - read this:
