Daughter turns 17 tomorrow, I've bought a Fiat 500 and am bracing myself for the inevitable 2k+ for insurance. Any recommendations for who to go with ?

Thanks.

£2k sounds about right.

For some reason I thought it would be cheaper while she's on a provisional and then go up to the 2k once she passes, not that much from the outset. Car is currently under my name with Tesco (normally the cheapest I can find) and they wanted an extra 2.5k to put her on !

One of the 'black box' companies. Co-operative seem to have been getting good press recently.

For provisional insurance, go with provisionalmarmalade. I was insured to drive a 2.0 Jag X-type for £60 a month.

It is also a very easy website to fill in, and doesnt take long at all. Plus you can drive as soon as youve filled it in. smile

Once I passed my test, I found that Bell insurance were among the cheapest.

Yeah this. They'll install a black box to monitor her driving and restrict her at certain times. Brings the premium down and allows a no claims bonus to be built up.

I personally wouldnt go with the black box insurance.

The car cannot be moved between 11pm-6am, if it is moved you have to pay extra (cant remember how much, but it isnt cheap). The car has to be on your driveway/outside your house every night. So that means she cant stay at a friends house and drive there.

Also, if for any reason you needed to borrow her car between 11 and 6, you still will not be able to, even though it isnt her driving it.

Not always the case - depends on each provider. My son had a black box last year: the only restriction was moving the car more than 100m between 11 and 5 or 6. He didn't have to be anywhere in particular and moving the car out of the way for another family vehicle didn't prejudice it. It didn't monitor driving style either.

I'm sure if the OP's daughter asks on one of the 'sixth form' forums, she'll have a list of current providers and their nuances far quicker than us old fogies can deliver through speculation and memories.

laugh

I've done the Marmalade provisional insurance while she's learning and I'll look into the others for when (if) she passes. The only thing not covered is the GAP insurance so she better not trash it.......
On the subject of the black boxes, I don't think that will work as I will be driving the car from time to time and it's a lot of fun...........Thanks for all the advice.

Admiral multicar policy has been very cheap for me.

Modified Astra Bertone coupe as first car was 1300 quid fully comp iirc.

I'm 18 now (1 years ncb) and pay just shy of £2500 for my S3 which is a group 18 car on the "old system".
