Hi all,

Basically I caurrently have a Caterham 7, I love the car but it is just a bit to raw for me to get enough use out of it. I am thinking of changing it for an Elise of some discription.

I was wondering if anyone on here has made the same move?

I would like to be able to use the car for some commuting to work although it will be a second car. I would like the car to be a bit of a compromise between comfort / usability and performance. If you could let me know which of the models would be best for tips of up to 300 miles in a day etc..

Many thanks

Mark

Hi Mark,

I haven't made the move from a 7 to an Elise, but I currently own a S1 Elise 135S, I drive this every day and once a week do a 120mile trip, from Watford to Wiltshire, this can take up to 3hours (curse of the M25!) at the end of the trip, I usually have a numb arse and in the summer, am extremely hot! but still get out of the car with a big smile! I have the 135S standard supplied Corbeau seats.

Good Luck.

Hi Mark, my 2p's worth would be to say go out and drive a few. From your current steed all Elises will probably feel very spacious and roomy, so that's that part out of the way.

In terms of which is the best compromise, the general opinion seems to be that the 111S is the best of all things. And if you're looking for a slightly more refined ride you're probably better off steering towards an S2 rather than an S1.

The standard 118bhp car is generally considered by most not to be enough, although I find mine (with a Lotus Sports Exhaust) still very quick and hugely enjoyable, both on B road and Motorway blats. 111s has the VVC engine and a close ratio box which keeps it on song better, the 135R's are rare, the S160 and S190 generally considered a bit too lumpy to be enjoyable as daily drivers (though I'm sure ppl would disagree). It's all a bit of a moot point as everyone loves their cars, and it's a real "horses for courses" thing.

Best advice would be to try a few and see what you fancy, both S1 and S2, and different engine variants. To be honest so long as you avoid a car with the standard seats comfort is really not a big problem.

Best of luck, let us know how you get on. Tim

I have owned a Caterham in the past and now own an Elise.
It really depends on what your objective is for the car. Both are very good 'weekend cars' - although I would point towards the Caterham as having the slight edge, especially if it is one of the higher performance derivatives.
However, the Elise really is a car that you can live with on a daily basis - I do typically 400 miles a week in mine and still look forward to driving it every day!
I would suggest that you try a few Elises - you will not be disappointed! It would certainly be my choice.
However, I do miss that occasion blast in the Caterham, side screens off, smelling of petrol and exhaust fumes, boiling hot, hair everywhere, picking dirt and flies from teeth...........

We used to have a Westfield and made the move to an Elise for this very reason.

The Elise is 100% more practical and useable on a daily basis. And thats a bog standard S1.

The Elise copes with crappy roads far better than the westie ever did and is generally a better drive. With the westie you always had the feeling the next bump was going to throw you into the ditch - the elise is much more forgiving.

As said previously the S2's have even more creature comforts and are better built.

111s is more refined still - so i've heard anyway - i've not been in one.

Definately worth going for a test drive though....

I made a swap the other way from a MK 1 111s (incidentally up for sale again on this site) to 1.6k Superlight.

I love the Caterham to bits and could never get bored of driving it, but it does get annoying when it is sat in the garage for week after week because of the poor weather

The Elise was a fab car, soooooo much more comfortable and refined, with infinatley better ride, damping and slightly crisper steering. As an every day option it is entirley reasonable. The only problem I found was that it never felt quite fast enough , whereas the Caterham makes me swaer out loud every time I let the revs go all the way round.

Either way, you can't go wrong

Hi,

My Caterham is a Autosport 50th Anneversary Model,

This model came standard with lots of options, I will try to list most of them now.. If I decided to sell the car it will also come with a set of 13" wheels and autocom system with all the options.

16" Wheels, (I think they are HPC)
Carbon Dash
LSD
1.6K supersport (135BHP)
6 speed gear box
Stereo CD Player
leather seats
stack system
FIA roll bar
Full weather equipment
Lower floor
4 point harnesses
heater
Heated screen
Starter button
Battery Master switch
I have just had new suspension set up by Gary May at Freestyle. New roll bars adjustable springs etc..

It is a fantastic car with only 8K miles on it.. It is a W Reg year 2000 I think.

The colour is red with a gold stripe round the nose cone. Car is in very good condition.

Mark

Hi OtherMonkey,

I am not really sure what I want for my car. I paid 19K for it in March 2003 and have spent 3K on upgrades since then. I would really want somewhere about 19K for it.

Are you looking to go in to a caterham?

What do you want for your elise?

my 111s is up for sale (thanks, Alex)

it offers many of the pleasures of the se7ens whilst keeping one's suede brogues dry, a definite benefit

is it one of the truly great road cars? undoubtedly

does it offer the pure ultimate hoonability that a superlight se7en does? no

speak soon!
