coolant bottle empty?
Discussion
A call for help from my daughter, her VW 1.2 polo started to smoke so decided to pull in. They think the coolant bottle is empty, if so I would guess easiest way is to refill it from expansion tank?
WHILST REFILLING LEAVE ENGINE RUNNING?
Look for any leakage from coolant system?
Check oil level and look for mayo on dip stick?
I can't think of any other advise to offer as they are stuck about 140 miles away from me. Is there anything I can add that may help, apart from join RAC.

Depends how bad the smoke / steam was. To be honest if it was bad enough to notice in the rear view mirror, then it will be going through coolant pretty quick.
Maybe top it up, drive a couple of miles (unless the car is creating a smokescreen behind it!) and check again.
I think the RAC is probably the only option.

Yup, told her over phone about being super careful with that. Seems water has been seen dribbling down side of engine block area, sounds like head gasket to me. Any ideas what a fair price would be to replace the item- its a three cylinder VW Polo of about 1200cc.
Bit of a random diagnosis. Could be a leaking hose, stat housing, pipe etc etc. Head gasket is a bit extreme and they rarely leak externally.stevieturbo said:

Crisis over! she asked the hotel where a reasonable garage is nearby, took the car there and the guys had a look at the car straight away. Diagnosed a leaking hose, ordered in a replacement for tomorrow morning and the charge all in is just forty pounds. Great service and fair price. crankedup said:

Great result and sounds like a good honest garage !Gassing Station | Engines & Drivetrain | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
