Land Rover buying advice please.

Mod Note: Mods could you please leave this in gg till Monday as friends plan on purchasing car on weekend and landy section seems a bit dead and need info as soon as possible.
Anyway as said friends are planning on buying a Landy defender tdi on the weekend. They have asked my advice. I was hoping i could get advice from forum members on known problems with 09 tdi defenders in terms of whether they have any known suspension electrical or engine gremlins and so on?

So 09 plate - that'll be the 2.4TDCi engined one, one of which we owned for a year.
1) Halfshafts will wear quickly if it's been used for heavy towing - if it HAS been used for heavy work (as ours had) AVOID. Buy on history NOT mileage.
2) Clutches aren't very strong - do the usual clutch checks.
3) Brake vacuum pump is prone to blowing up - they changed from single seal to double seal at around 2009. If it's the former, it WILL fail.
4) Corrosion - literally everywhere. Check internal bolts, seat runners then check the chassis very carefully. Early ones were actually better sealed. Later ones have almost no protection and MUST be Waxoyled or DInitroled. Rear crossmember (think bumper) is also very corrosion prone - check this as it's a pain to sort.
5) Windscreen roof seals - often fail
6) Handbrake - there was a recall recently. Check it's been done.
7) Boost alloys (if it has them). They aren't lacquered and get pretty knackered. They are very strong but look shabby quickly.
That's all I can think of for now. Just buy with open eyes - it'll be £460 road tax and do no more than mid 20s to the gallon. They are excellent at what they do but you need to really "get" them and be prepared to do a lot of looking after of them.

Just popped round and am assured its a Defender so all good there. Its got less than 15k on the clock I believe and they only do a max of around 8k miles a year. So if not waxoyled I think thats the only thing they really need worry about other than the clutch if its a manual.Tallbut Buxomly said:

It will be a manual - they all are. Just check for corrosion and I'd still make sure the clutch is okay. When I was a Geotech Engineer, our 110 clutches lasted 8k miles! And the roof seals can actually be faulty from brand new. Oh and check under all floor mats for moisture - even brand new ones can leak.

k i thought advising them to get a landy was a good idea considering they tend to keep their cars for a long long time.Should have advised they get a toyota bmw or lexus.

If you do some basic maintenance, they will last very well. But those who want fault free reliability and low running costs need to look elsewhere. Our 110XS cost way more than any car we've had to run and our £52k Cali's (that replaced the 110) running costs are probably a third as much!

I like them a lot but I was a little surprised at the costs - main dealer 40k service? That'll be £605 please...

as said, an 09 will be the transit engined tdci which is the most reliable engine to date, just make sure the recall has been done on the vacuum seal that can blow and cover the engine bay with oil

Dealer reckons waxoyle can be both of benefit and drawback as it keeps water out but also traps any water in so looks like its not going to be done.

ks if it's not been done wait until midsummer when everything is BONE DRYthen get it waxoiled make sure whoever does it does inside the box sections as well
as out and it will be fine for about 2 years then do it again.
Defs are high maintenance it's the nature of the beast if you like tinkering
they are wonderful if not have a deep wallet handy you will need it.
3 time series owner and 2 time defender owner. getting old so now i drive a Jeep
