Hello,

been on here a bit recently as seems a good place for advice when it comes to car niggles.

have an Astra H 1.9CDTI Z19DTH engine, 150bhp. these are known for chewing Alternators but recently I have had two new ones fitted and both presented the same problem after replacing what was the oringal.

first replacement after a couple of days brought up the red battery light on the dash, went back to the garage and they kindly replaced it for another. (Brand new again)

again, this one after an initial drive brings up the dreaded red battery light on the dashboard. anyone have any ideas on what could be causing this. odd thing, if I turn the engine off and then back on again it seems to solve the problem and it doesnt come on for the rest of my trip, only happens now and then not all the time.

Both alternators were brand new out of the box, garage have also checked and double check connections and fitting of this and seems perfectly fine, they offered to replace this one again but as its inconvenient for me i figured I would ask you lot for advice before losing my car for the day again.

anything i'm missing, Vauxhall are known for giving the same warning lights for a number of errors so could be something else other than the alternator but what else does the red battery light represent? done the peddle test and no codes stored.

You need to fit a genuine vauxhall unit, had this a few times with non gen units, unsure as to why though.

Did anyone read the fault codes? It's a good idea to do that first before swapping parts out.

My first port of call would be giving the battery a good charge on a proper charger.

didnt check for fault codes before the garage did the first change, but when this first happened they checked the alternator to see if it was charging and it wasnt so all fingers pointed to that.

no faults codes at present either?

could this be a bad earth perhaps?

appreciate its perhaps nopt a gen Vauxhall part but is this error going to happen forever with this part?

When I spoke to vauxhall about this they didnt even ask if it was a genuine part or not, they suggested bad earth perhaps?
