Why box me in on the motorway?
Discussion
A woman this morning boxed me in on the motorway...why do they do it? I was in lane one reading the road around me with a lorry about a mile ahead of me...anyway I see this woman in a snotter coming up fast in lane 2 so plan on waiting to let her past before going around the lorry rather than pull out on her. She then pulls parallel and sits there matching my speed for ages. Pretty soon I am closing in on the lorry and having to think about breaking to slow down and tuck in behind her...cow....what poor road sense and judgement. Was I right to get revenge by droping a gear, flooring it and undertaking her or should I have eased off/breaked?
Normal behaviour in my experience. The most infuriating was an artic last week which wouldn't leave enough space in front to allow me to get out of lane 3 and start heading for my exit - he actively tailgated the lorry in front to block me. I had to drop back behind him and overtook him again on the left getting to my exit!

Wait... Are you serious? Surely this is a wind-up, right?1981linley said:

That pisses me off too. It's got to the point now that you know it's going to happen even though they're still 100 yards behind you, so if I find myself about to be in that position I get out into the next lane early and let them sort themselves out. It is however refreshing when the approaching car foresees what is about to happen and either eases off and flashes you out/moves over to the next lane/gets his or her toe down so they're past you before you need to alter your speed.oldcynic said:

You do realise that truck follow each other very closely (closer than you would even think about doing in a car)XG332 said:

And they shouldn't.. 2 second rule, in 40 tons worth of truck, it amazes me to see them driving a fag paper apart, no wonder so many of them die in crashes
.. I'm afraid to say they are among the worst drivers on the road, there have been times when I have beem down to 20-30 mph in thick fog, and they have come tearing past sat on their 56mph limiter, they must be using the force! RWD cossie wil said:

I see this pretty regularly, always assumed it was incompetent MLM-type drivers who rock up to a nearby car and decide to just match their speed for a bit, until they move out of their way or the MLM gets bored, then zoom off and find the next guy.
I derive a certain childish pleasure from dropping down a few cogs and booting it to get in front of a wing commander. Also amuses me when I end up in front of a MLM overtaking a truck or letting people out of a sliproad etc, they slow down to match my speed, then sit there with an empty outside lane. When I pull in, they then boot it and speed off into the distance, often undertaking the car in lane 3 at the same time.

Whilst not condoning it i can see why they do it.

Would you prefer them creeping up on each other and pulling out a few feet before the next truck. Or pulling out half a trucks length and taking even longer to pass the next truck.
As for fog. Being 6ft up sometimes makes a huge difference. I couldnt believe it when I first went in a truck in the fog. But it was alot cleared just a little higher up. (might not be that common, I don't know)

It's a nightmare on busier motorways, on the M25 I was trying for over a mile to get into the inside lane to take the A127 junction, trucks nose to tail just wouldn't let people in, even with polite "please let me over" signals, not people barging across from the outside lane... Anyway, it's ace being perfect Would you prefer them creeping up on each other and pulling out a few feet before the next truck. I'd have blithely accepted the t
ttery (just because there is so much of it on the roads these days), eased off, moved into L2, passed the wagon, then moved back into L1.See, I'm very much getting into the mindset (certainly over the last 18 months or so) that I want to let other drivers get in front of me; I want to witness the accident and take avoiding action, rather than be a part of it.

Serves you right for trundling along like a pussy in lane one.

Hmm, here's a suggestion: get in lane 1 earlier? Don't try to kid me that trucks are "nose to tail" for a solid 1 mile with no adequate gaps to slot into as that's just BS. I drive them and I have never experienced a situation like that on the M25 nor anywhere else. From your original post it seems pretty clear to me that you are staying in lane 3 until the 300yd marker then trying to cut across and barge your into a non-existent gap and spitting your dummy out when the truckers quite rightly give you the middle finger. Learn how to drive properly and get into lane 1 earlier for your exit and the (non-)problem that you have will cease to exist.
