Oh, and in your second picture, it looks like the fan belt isn't on.
Insofaras the 'which engine', question, I think the engine size would be useful. Since it's got a single port carb, and the same kind of oil filler than mine had, I'm guessing 1600, but it's difficult to tell.

I was awaiting a replacement pulley as the s
t chrome one it has on broke. Which was why the belt was offI've just fitted the new one.
The spots are not full of water. Two of the lenses are upside down though. Gets better light coverage that way

That's probably enough for a car of that weight (mate of mine builds high-performance Beetle engines, and I've helped him out a few times). I could tell it had the regulator bolted on top of fan shroud.

Chrome ones can do that. Although I had a supposedly good aluminium one that warped a bit over time...

When was it built, and who made the chassis?
The Chassis was originally built about 8 years ago. Since then it's undergone many many changes. It's mostly a Dev car rather than a finished item.It was originally designed as the template for a fleet of them to be used on a rally drive somewhere, and left there for 6 months. The idea being that you could return to them and even if everything usable had been nicked off the frame you'd still have a virtually indestructible chassis left to bolt a few bits onto and off you go.
And the chap who built it is called Mark (he runs Dreamshack) The website is awful. but you get the idea

When you said that, I was a bit surprised, because I was wondering how it could have got through the mandatory SVA/IVA test. Then I looked up the registration, and found that it is still registered as a VW 1300 saloon. It's something you might want to look into, because as it would seem that it isn't road legal in its current form. I'm not trying to be negative here, although it may seem so, because I love this style of vehicle and would really like to have one myself, but am concerned about whether it could be done legally.

It's still got a lot of bug parts so for the purposes of registration it's "rebody" and has enough "points" from the original car to not need the IVA/SVA only an VOSA(?) inspection to check it meets the points requirement afaik. The builder knows more about the ins and outs than I do. In it's current state it is legal. For insurance you obviously have to tell them it's not a VW Saloon anymore. Ditch the sewing machine engine and stick in something a bit more manly, say, oh, perhaps a Porka 996 turbo enigine and i could like that rail........... ;-)
If I'm honest 40hp has never been so fun! It shifts like hell and with the massive rears it'll get pretty tail happy at 15mph on a slightly damp roundabout

It's not a rebody, I'm afraid. That would be like a glass fibre 4 seater beach buggy body on an unshortened VW chassis. The builder may know more about it than you do, and may even be under the impression that to call it a 'rebody' and not submit it for an IVA is legal, but I fear he is misleading you.singlecoil said:
