If it's anything like an Almera of that vintage there will be plastic trim around it that will be removable somehow (by force on the Almera) then it'll be screwed in and in a proprietory cage that you'll need to transplant to the new unit.

is yours the one where it has a little flippy box above the radio?
If so, there's two little black plastic covers which you clip off inside the flippy box bit, at the top left and right of the aperture, and there's 2 philips screws behind them. Also, if you feel under the heater controls, there's another two philips screws under there. Don't mix them up though, the two on the bottom are flat headed ones. Once you have them all out, the fun starts!
Clip off the a-pillar trims, then you need to clip the top of the dashboard off. There's a single 10mm bolt holding the radio onto the dashboard. You can do it by just clipping the dash up in the middle and using various extension bars to do it (I've done it loads of times) but the easiest way is popping the top of the dash off.
Once the radio is out, you need to unscrew it from the housing, then it's just a case of screwing the new one in and replacing everything. You don't need a wiring adaptor for this one as it has ISO wiring (unless it's one of the very VERY first Japanese ones, in which case you might need Autoleads adaptor PC2-77-4 to convert it. White plug = adaptor needed, two black plugs = fine)
Of course, if it's one of the older bubble shape ones, then it's even easier. Pop the ashtray out, two philips screws behind there, then feel along the underside of the bar which seperates the heater controls from the radio, two more philips screws there - once they're out, clip the black plastic bit forward and pivot it up, then take the four screws out of the radio and remove. A replacement radio's cage will fit through the dash so put the dash back into place first. You'll need Autoleads adaptor PC2-13-4 to convert the wiring.

Ah great thanks for the reply. The micra is the top one (floppy box model), the existing radio has two black connectors and also a set of three square coloured ones that fit together, yellow, green and red if memory serves me, of which only the green one has any wires connected to it. Any idea what this is and what i should connect to it?

Forget about the three little ones that clip together - just dangle them down the back of the dash somewhere. Your aftermarket radio will come with an ISO connector (either part of the back of the radio, or on a little wire that plugs into the back of it). The two black connectors plug into this, they only fit one way (so you can't get it wrong).If you really want to know what it is, it's possibly either steering controls, a speed pulse for speed sensitive volume control on the original headunit, or a dashboard display feed. You may be able to get an adaptor for it if it's steering wheel controls, but the other two mean it's probably useless. I've never plugged one of them into anything on a Micra before, so I wouldn't worry about it!
You *might* need a aerial adaptor, think it's Autoleads part number PC5-52 but I may be wrong, they're about a fiver from Halfords, or less from a car audio place. Some radios (Sony in particular) come with them in the box.
