Engine soundproofing?
Discussion
I think the insulation also keeps the heat away from the paintwork eg above the manifolds. I noticed that my old car had a few minor cracks appearing and I blamed the lack of insluation.
I had had to remove it after it had started to come away. The throttle linkage had cut a slit in it and it jammed the throttle at 5000 rpm coming off at a downhill motorway junction when I was doing 90

Thanks boys, the throttle cable got stuck open twice yesterday afternoon, the first time was not funny. Second time was not so pooie yet still something. Think i'll just cut it all off. Got told that Dynamat (audio) could be a solution if i wanted to soundproof. Not sure how resistant to heat it is.
Bought some fire retardent soundproofing for mine about 3/4 inch thick.
I haven't fitted it yet and I was going to leave space around the area of the throttle linkage.
I wouldn't advise using the bitumen type adhesive as the heat will probably make the material sag and I think the adhesive isn't so fire resistant.
However, my refurbished engine sounds nice and sweet now so I may not bother fitting it at all!

.
. Mind you, I'm sure the GRP on the bonnet must be 2" thick in places
.
and I realised the risk of it jamming the throttle open, so when my original bonnet was replaced, I left it off. No ill effects to the paint over the last 13 years either.
