Paid in a bunch of cheques recently but some confusion has arisen - not sure if one of the cheques has been attributed to the wrong person.

If I can confirm the cheque number with the person who wrote it I can confirm it was paid in correctly.

Can I ask the bank for the cheque numbers that were paid in in that transaction (about 8 cheques at that time)? Do they keep records like that and are they accessible to account holders?

I've managed to get front and back scans/photocopies of cheques I've paid to people from HSBC with minimal fuss before now.

ETA, Sorry, think I've come at your problem from the exact opposite direction. But, the banks do keep records of every transaction.

Hmmm, any thoughts as to how I might go about it? Ideally online would be good (internet banking?) or do you think it's the sort of thing that would need to be done over the counter?

Yes. Call the bank and give them the cheque numbers and they will confirm. Had southern water dispute a cheque payment but HSBC sorted it.

I don't have the cheque numbers, that's the problem... I want to get a list of the cheque numbers and the names they were from in a batch that I paid in, in order to confirm I have already cashed a cheque from one person (they have written me another for some reason and my records aren't clear so I want to make sure I don't pay in both (or neither!) of them!

Sorry, I should have read your post properly! HSBC provided a photocopy of the cheque for me, so yes, I imagine you can reverse-engineer the process to get the info you need.

A few years back I had an issue about a cheque that I had written on my personal account. I got a copy of the front/back of the cheque, no problem and no charge at all. I think I just phoned the bank, described the problem, and hey presto the copy cheque arrived.

The total deposit, the cheque numbers and the amounts should be easy just tell 'em the date.
The payer of the cheque, not so.
Can't you sort it out just using the amounts from the breakdown of the deposit.

I am assuming you have some form of acc rec, but payed in the cheques before logging them in properly (been there done thatbiggrin)

ETA
Call the girl at the companies acc payable and ask for the number of the cheque she last sent you. (just hope she doesn't ask you for the amount or you'll look an idiot) If she does just you think you may have credited to the wrong company and want to double check.
An English accent works wonders in the States, probably not so effected at home.
