Modded Griff owners - how much extra to insure?
Discussion
Folks,
I'm in the process of upgrading my Chim 500, some ACT induction mods and a Mark Adams chip and rolling road. Most of the upgrade threads I've read of on PH have been done by Griff owners, hence the question here. For those who've upgraded, what did you have done and how much did the insurance go up by.
Thanks,
Steve.

i've pretty much done the lot.
speak to Aarun at sunninghill 0870 787 8019.
he sorted mine at an increase of 10%
he now knows TVRs, the tuners and the right track people. AND he's user friendly (if you know what i mean!)
this includes trackday cover which is worth a FORTUNE!
ask around, but i couldn't find better!

I'm with Sunninghill currently, so that's good to hear. The Nitrons are on, no issue there, the initial rolling road setup will hopefully not make too much difference either. What might make the difference is an ACT triple plenum, 404H and uprated injectors, but I'm holding off doing that for now ...

Steve.
I've pretty much everything on mine. P404, chipped, brakes, exhaust, remapped, suspension upgrades, rollbar etc etc.
My standard Griff, a 1996 N was 600 fully comp with business use and unlimited mileage.
The modded one is 580 unlimited mileage, business use, fully comp. The minor difference comes about because I moved 2 miles this year so have adifferent post code.
The service agent wrote a nice note for the insurers explaining that the P404 really only makes the torque more useable and does not give a noticeable increase in performance

No addition to premium (A Manning - TVR club scheme) but they did want to see an "engineers report" to say that the modifications did not make the car more likely to fall off the road!
My understanding is that if the car does fall off the road in a suspicious way they will try to back-off some or all of the claim to the "engineer" (hence some garages I spoke to refused to give a report that the insurance company would accept).

Just spoken to Aaron at Sunninghill. With all my mods they want an additional 15%. 5% for the chip, 10% for the plenum (nothing extra for the cam, exhaust or injectors). Premium would have been cheaper than renewing through A Manning (Cornhill) without the mods, and it includes track day cover as well. Can't say fairer than that, really!
I've got TVR Power uprated cam (355), solid lifters, ACT plenum and twin throttles, Mark Adams Tornado chip, larger Air Flow Meter, AP brakes and Raceline wheels. All added over a period of years, kept Pearts fully informed and asside from an admin charge of £25 one year, no increase. Cost is around £450 p.a. Rich...
Not bad, when you consider it's a group 20 car, and a new body is over £10k if you smash it up (which you're more likely to do than with a lot of cars, since there's no ABS or traction control).
BTW Tuscan insurance is very high, due to it being more 'accessible'. I.e. more inexperienced drivers are buying them with their city bonuses instead of Boxsters, etc. and writing them off.
At least since the Griff tends to appeal more to enthusiasts, it keeps then insurance down.

as richb says, if you're doing it by steps, this can work out cheaper.
they can, however charge for each step making it more expensive!
check with likely companies.
in sunninghills case it was best to do it in one hit (engine stuff, running gear was already done) one of the most expensive things was the spider conversion? this fell into the "alloy wheels? thats £50 mate" catagory.
again!
however that track cover for the FULL car cost is worth around £250-00 an EVENT!!!!!
so well worth the fag! particularly as i do about 12 events per year
