They are good for at least 150mph. But at 130mph (your mates speedo is over-reading slightly), the discombobulator engages and acts as a limiter to stop the tyres exploding.

157mph actually. Get your facts straight.

He's probably just a crap driver. A cars top speed is determined by the skill of the driver.
Most Mondeos can do about 170mph, it sounds like your mate is doing it wrong.

That has only been proven when running tyres at 60PSI, glovebox open, front seats reclined as much as possible.

I did it once in my Mondeo Aspen.

Clearly he hasn't been cadence clutching.

Has it got a sunroof? The sunroof ones were always slower, like the blue ones. Tell him to get a red one with no sunroof.

It stops at 134 mph because that's as fast as it will go.

It's not restricted it just hasn't got enough power to go any faster.

Ford listed the top speed as 128mph so the extra 6 mph indicated on the speedometer is a positive error which is common on most cars once you get to silly speeds.

As I recall from my 4x4, the actual quoted top speed for 2.0s was 134mph anyway.

Parkers claims 128, but that's within the margin of error of the speedometer.

The earlier cars had a more powerful engine, although not that much different. 136 for the Mk1 compared to 128 for the Mk2. pretty sure your 4x4 will have been a Mk1

Yes the 4x4 was Mk1 only, but due to the 4x4 engine braking with winter tyres fitted only to the offside of the vehicule, you could easily reach a 138mph in the snow.

Ah - I was easily capable of confusing the very similar power and top speed figures back then, never mind now! I think it's 136PS, so 134bhp so I presume that's what I was thinking of.

Yeah, I thought that too. She never did it and I'm not sure it's a credible claim, but was happy enough at a fast cruise.
