i've just re-entered the world of LPG motoring, and it's fair to say prices have been hiked a fair bit since last time.

however, this has happened for all grades and all fuels, so fair enough. what doesn't seem to be fair is the difference between pump prices, and even worse between bulk prices and pump prices.

would i be correct in assuming that if i ordered 1000 litres of petrol or diesel, it would work out only a few pence cheaper per litre than pump prices?

bulk LPG can be had for about 52ppl, cheapest pump price is 70p and the most expensive 85p.

i was always led to believe there was little profit per litre for the retailer for fuel, maybe 3ppl. this clearly isn't the case for LPG though.

Is that bulk LPG with road duty paid?

The big issue with bulk petrol buys and storage is all the H&S and planning regulations for storing large quantities of flammable liquids....if at home. Basically a no go for most of us. Dieso is a diffenent issue but will still hit you with some of the above.

Yes it's cheaper...if you can skirt the red tape.

ah. didn't think duty would be different for road fuel/ heating. makes sense now though, like red diesel/ normal pump diesel.

still, the % difference in pump prices is ridiculous. no way asda and shell are getting their lpg 15p cheaper per litre than BP though.

Yes its because of Duty on Road fuel including LPG, But just like Petrol and Diesel LPG keeps going up, my bulk price LPG went up 4p Per ltr in Feb and has gone up another 4p per litre in March.

The problem is the diesel that fuels the truck that brings the LPG to the retailer.

Cheapest LPG around here is 67p.

This is off the top of my head and alcohol induced...

Wholesale price + duty + VAT + delivery cost + supplier margin + dealer margin

=

36ppl + 15.75ppl + 10 .40ppl + 6.00ppl = 66.15ppl and that's before anyone's taken some profit!

If you look at the correlation between the cost breakdown and the PPL figures you'll notice I haven't applied margin/profit.

The 52ppl is for home heating gas.
I pay 75.9 now for "road" gas and every single penny of the difference is tax.
Still I could be buying petrol at £1.40 a litre!!

i get the heating v fuel duty thing. doesn't excuse asda flogging it to me for 69.7p as they did this morning, 72 litres of it indeed. and BP charging 86p a few miles up the road. you can see similar differential between BP stations in some parts.

It depends on when they were last filled. The wholesale price shot up last Thursday so ASDA could be selling product at the old rate.

In fact, either someone's dropped a bk or they're selling at a loss, so suggest you fill your boots do to speak,
