A bit over your budget (smaller models are available) but these Q Acoustics 2050i are well reviewed.

Will take a look at both mentioned. Was currently swaying towards the KEF IQ5SE.

I had a pair of Kef IQ5s a few years back. They were great looking, easy to position and good AV speakers. I found them slightly uninvolving for music though. SEs will no doubt be improved in some way though...

I found the IQ5's a bit lacking in 'scale' i.e. they sounded a bit lacking in the bass department.

I expected more from a floor stander.

If it's bass you want - I would look elsewhere, unless your room is on the smaller side.

I've not heard the IQ50SE, but I do have a pair of IQ90's and a pair of IQ30's and think they are amazing. If mine are anything to go by, you won't be disappointed by the IQ5. I would definitely try them out though as KEF's have a very 'lean' sound and not to everybody's tastes. I love the sound KEF speakers produce and as I own the larger version of what you're interested in I can thoroughly recommend them.

I think the IQ series, although now discontinued, look pretty damned nice too and most definitely worth taking a look at. You could always grab a set of IQ10's (if available) at a later date if you were interested in expanding your system to a 5.1 system

Went with the IQ50's in the end, along with Cambridge Audio amp & Cambridge Audio Sonata streaming thingy (basically have my music on a network hard drive somewhere in house & the Sonata unit connects wirelessly).

All in all, quite impressed.
