Hi All

Has anyone used after-market DAB in a modern Porsche to good effect, or is retro-fitting more hassle than the end result justifies?

Thanks in advance for any pointers.

If you want to listen to Radio 4Extra or any of the other DAB only stations then it's the only way. It's particularly good for sport obviously. Fact is though that the coverage is stll very patchy and reception in cars is a particlar problem.

I hsve a Highway in one car and a JVC DAB head unit in the other and reception on the Highway is actually better some of the time. When there's no signal (maybe a third of the time) it's infuriating but on days where I drive for four or five hours with uninterrupted test match commentary I wouldn't be without it. Plus the Highway allows me to play mp3 files in what is a fairly old and basic car.

My problem is i dont fancy the cable hanging around etc. Doesnt look very tidy, but i would love DAB in the car, for bbc 6 music.

My 991 has and aux and power sockets in the glove box. I gather that my local installer can hide it all in there (head unit included) and all that will be visible is a small black box on the inside of the screen.

Yes, I'll have to go into the glove box to change stations but at least I'll have DAB and there will be little visible evidence.

What are the latest thoughts on this, I was thinking Denison gateway 500with the dab add on but reviews don't seem great. So are the Alpine Ezi DAB and pure gateway 300 the best options?

This is what BMW use for their DAB upgrade, invisible and it uses the original display...

I am in discussion with my local OPC at present on this. They are suggesting that Porsche will have to offer a retrofit. If you read my other post on. 'DAB now an option' I am far from happy on this issue. I am at a loss as to why Porsche have not offered the DAB option on the C4s Cabs for 2013 or at least offered the choice of waiting just a few more weeks, to those want it and spending 100k or so! but no, and no retrofit either. Had I have known I would have surely waited another just another few weeks as the option has now finally arrived. Not amused.

I'm still amazed how backward Porsche are when it comes to ICE.

I wouldn't hold your breath about a retrofit, you might turn blue and die!

Sounds like a possible solution but will it affect the warranty, not being Porsche approved and all that? This would be my main concern.

Not sure why people complain about the service being patchy-went from north Cumbria to Cheshire the other week & must have lost signal for a total of less than 10 seconds.

Certainly better than analogue if you know that stretch of the M6.

The other problem as I understand it is the traffic updating through the existing PCM which is now FM won't work with add on after market products once analogue is turned off so effectively rendering all pre digital PCMs pretty much useless. When will the switchover happen? who knows......confused

When FM does get switched off, I will be able to justify spending upwards of £1k on a new head unit.... Until then, the basic CDR-30 will have to do. And yes Porsche are backwards on their ICE when you consider what a simple Ford can offer at a fraction of the price of the PCM.
