Geneva 2012: GTA Spano

Spanish supercar is production-ready, say its makers

Fledgling Spanish supercar maker GTA motor has unveiled the production-ready version of the Spano at the Geneva show, a car it showed in prototype form last year.

Valencia-based GTA has big plans for its Spano supercar, aiming to shift 99 of them, building around 15 examples per year of what is billed as "the fastest and most powerful automobile built in Spain for commercial purposes".

In fact, the Spano is aiming at the heart of the hypercar establishment, citing the likes of Pagani and Koenigsegg as its main rivals. It's certainly priced accordingly - the Spano costs 570,000 euros plus taxes (that's £475K).

But there's engineering to back up that price. The 8.3-litre V10 gets 820hp courtesy of a spot of supercharging, there's a 7-speed sequential gearbox driving the rear wheels, the bodywork is carbon fibre, and the under-structure is a carbon, Kevlar and titanium monocoque. There's even a clever panoramic roof that darkens or lightens at the flick of a switch, Mercedes Magic Sky-style.

The Spano also gets multi-adjustable suspension, an electronically activated wing, AP ceramic brakes with six-piston calipers.

Performance claims suitably hyper, too, with a top speed of 217mph and a 0-60mph sprint time of 2.9 seconds.

All of which is suitably impressive, but does GTA Motor have the badge kudos to make it work? And is the Spano dramatic enough to stand out in a decidedly extrovert crowd? That remains to be seen...

I quite like it.

How long before we see one on wrecked exotics after the bonnet catch releases at 100+ mph, leaving the driver only able to see a sticker with the VIN number and 'Don't Panic' in Spanish.

That sounds and looks absolutely mental. Presumably it's a dodge viper engine being an 8.3 V10?

GTA Spano just sounds like one of those made up cars for a video game because they couldn't afford to licence a real car.

Spano?

Make it look nice and give it a decent name; why do independent manufacturers fail on this so many times? At least they got the looks right (for me at least).

Call it the GTA 820.

"Geneva 2012: GTA Spano

..... does this mean 'ready' in the same way that the Spanish HRT F1 team are 'race-ready'? hehe

Nothing different. A Gumpert in different clothes.

What I would like to see is somthing more along the lines of the IFR Aspid- Not ugly though, but light and interesting.

I'm sure they'll sell loads, what with all the money sloshing around Spain at the moment...

Not sure if serious.

They have some economic problems as a country, but the quality of cars on the road is at least equal to the UK. I was in the Pyrenees last week, every other car was a Porsche Cayenne and a good 5% of the others were supercars of some description.

It has monied areas just like the UK.
