Took the W209 CLK 320 into a local radio services shop yesterday. I trust them as I've used them for years. I had a faulty cable on my RF modulator. Not a big job.
When I returned an hour later the car was facing the opposite direction, the seat had been moved, the CD had been changed to radio and the Gearbox was in 'Sport' mode.

Is this normal?

Did they actually drive it, maybe they just moved it for some reason. Did you really expect them to work on the car no matter where you left it?

EDIT: I just re-read the first post:

I'm not a radio expert, but wouldn't they need to listen to the radio to see if they'd fixed the radio?

Did you note your mileage when you dropped it off?

If you were that concerned, should have noted the odometer reading.

Does it really matter ?

Did you ask them why they drove your car, or do you think the uninformed opions of the internet will be more helpful?

It's a peculiar quirk of that model - in order to get the head unit out the car has to be perfectly aligned along a very specific compass bearing, the gearbox has to be in the most responsive mode, and to access the radio wiring the seat has to be moved back and forth along its runners.

Nothing to worry about.

I think that they.
1, Moved the car to work on it.
2, The guy who moved it was a different height / build to yourself.
3, Tested the work they`d done explaining the change between radio / cd.
4, Mistakenly touched a gearbox button whilst parking it.

If you`ve used this place for years and trust them then I can`t see the issue......

lol, That's what I thought!
I didn't see the point of going back to the shop. I hadn't checked the mileage, there was no need to move the car. I didn't notice I was in sport mode until I was five minutes away from the shop.
It doesn't bother me that much, thing is the driver wouldn't have been insured, if he'd asked I probably would have let him take it for a spin.

I saw them drifting around the tesco roundabout with a gang of hookers in the back.

Forgot to mention, they were also blasting out classic FM at full volume. Petrol bomb the garage.

Lets be honest, if I asked them why they drove the car in Sport mode they won't be honest, will they. There was no need to move the car.

Funny you say that - some cars you do need to move the gear lever to get the radio out. Several of the manual cars I've owned required you to be in 4th gear to get the radio out, because that was the position which gave the most clearance.

OP - how is sport mode engaged? Is it a button or do you just move the knob to the side or something? How feasible is it that they would have done it on purpose to gain access or by accident as they were working?

But if you asked them why they drove your car and they didn't have a good reason it would put them off doing it again. Or they might have a good reason.

Asking them makes more sense than asking us.

I wasn't asking you if they drove the car, if you read the question I was asking if this was normal. If I was just being a bit paranoid.
If I ask a question from now on Captain Muppet I don't expect you to answer. I don't even expect you to comment, I would hate to take up your time and energy with my car related queries. Thank you very much for taking the time out to respond to this thread though. You are a wonderful person. bow
