Which are the best Rover V8 Cylinder Heads for a 5.0ltr?
Discussion
Morning gents,
I am considering a top end engine refresh later on this year which will consist of big valve cylinder heads, a new cam and a RR mapping session. I know of the Wildcat and Merlin heads which get great write-ups but as I understand it these will not accept standard Rover rocker covers and standard exhaust manifolds, I therefore which to stick with the original Rover castings.
I know the likes of JE, V8D, RPI etc offer various different specifications of cylinder heads. What peoples opinions of which heads are best for an N/A 5.0ltr engine?
Matthew

I was thinking more in comparison to V8D or JE heads.
According to a few people in the trade I have spoken to about this the very early 5.0 cars had the same Big Valve heads as were fitted to the very rare and desirable 4.3BV and 4.5BV precat Griffs. Apparently most of the 500s however to not have TVR Big Valve heads they have a less free flowing version known as TVR500 heads.I do not know how the TVR factory Big Valve and 500 heads compare to the current offerings from V8D, JE & RPI. I am hoping to be enlightened.

They all use the same valves (at least TVR BV/500 ones anyway), just the guides & porting differ in subtle areas (apart from the obvious rings in the eraly heads).I do not know how the TVR factory Big Valve and 500 heads compare to the current offerings from V8D, JE & RPI. Does it really matter, the combination of how / when your piston shifts air + cam + valves + induction + exhaust + porting is the combination that matters most. Thats where chatting with someone like Rob to get a 'recipe' is the best option IMHO. Too many times the 'menus' offered are restrictive or may be suitable for cars with different capacaties, suited to what the seller has already.... It's not like you can assemble an eclectic collection of parts and they will all work together perfectly IYSWIM.

Very sound advice sir. I will engage with the various suppliers and see what they recommend as a cam, heads & ECU package.Does it really matter, the combination of how / when your piston shifts air + cam + valves + induction + exhaust + porting is the combination that matters most. bottom end is very strong and the addition of forged pistons allowed a higher than standard compression ratio, which, I imagine went into the consideration for the cam profile, along with the high flow injectors and the head modifications which included bulleted guides and reshaping of the ports along with matching these with the inlet manifold etc. Basically the engine was built to a target and not to a budget, which, although an expensive exercise is IMHO probably cheaper in the long run than 'bolting' on goodies which ultimately may never quite be right for each other.
Phew
