I tried the beta and there is nothing that really makes me jump to upgrade (the map feature is nice) but for £60 I probably will anyway...!

Yeah, that was also my reaction when I saw the pricing

I presumed it was an introductory offer, but then I saw this tweet from Scott Kelby:

Yup - been really liking 4 Beta. The controls are much more intuitive, and I am sure I am getting more controllable results in Develop.It's also going to have to cope with some big files shortly - at the moment it's been running impeccably (Mac with Lion, 2.2GHz i7 and 8Gb RAM, so it should!)

I haven't used Map or Web at all, mind.

How multi-threaded do you find it?
Wonder if it's pegging all the hyper-threaded cores when rending out the files...

Just wondering how effectively it's using the power of your i7 processor

I'm not a mac user but I believe if you use spotlight to search for 'activity monitor' then launch that program. You'll get a list of the running processes, and at the bottom a bunch of graphs that represent each of the different 'cores' in the processor (the i7 will probably show 8 cores)

There is a screen shot on apple's site - http://www.apple.com/macosx/apps/all.html#activity

If you run LR4 and then render out a file you can watch those graphs to see how many of them see increased activity - probably pegged to 100% i'd guess.

Aha, you're only getting 1 graph for overall cpu usage as you have more than 4 cores in your cpu:

"To see the CPU usage for each core individually on systems with more than four cores, use the CPU Usage window or Floating CPU Window. These windows can be viewed by selecting them from Activity Monitor's Window menu."

I've been playing with beta and quite enjoying it.

I thought I should buy it as I can get student discount this year, which brings it closer in pricing to Aperture. But it seems cheaper than I expected anyway.

Aha! Does indeed look like it's fully using your i7 Looks like a bit of variation across the cores, but I'd have been surprised if it was all identical.

The chip actually has 4 cores, but with hyper-threading it shows as 8.

I've been plugging away with PSE for the last couple of years - I now know the basics but have never really found it that intuitive.

So I thought I would try out LR4... only had a quick play but initial reaction was 'where is the rest of it ?!'. Seems to be very light on the editting side, or am I missing the point as usual ?

I view Photoshop as principally designed for image manipulation, whilst Lightroom is principally designed to send me into an incandescent rage process RAW files. Others may see it differently though.

Right, clear business opportunity here! I'm gonna set up a LR coaching experience. LR stands for "Lovely from Raw" - don't listen to Simpo!

£35per hour, introductory half hour a tenner. Would it sell?

LR changed how I deal with photos to a huge degree. Not sure I would benefit from upgrading but It's an awesome tool. My friend raves over CS5 but for me LR is much more usefull than any versions of PS I have used.

Wow, that will ps off everyone who bought LR3 at the amazing price of £95 (reduced only last month?), thinking it was a great deal...I almost did, glad I was too disorganised to get round to doing it!
