A bit of a "what to buy next" crisis for me over the last few weeks - another Impreza, another Evo, another S2000, or a Golf R32GTi or another BMW 330Ci Sport Convertible (on and on it went, bored with it and becoming boring).

This morning I went to view a Defender 90 that has been rebuilt (current owner 6 years) and fitted with a 3528cc Ranger Rover engine + 5 speed gear box, an impulsive buy but I thought "what the heck you only live once".

Quickest £4,000 I have spent.

Probably a Friday and weekend toy.smile

Looks good for a 22 year old and I pick it up on the 17th of March:

Looks pretty clean for an old 3.5. Love the sound of carb'd engines.

Looks lovely btw, well done. Those tyres will munch the whole of the countryside! wink

Looks great.

Take it easy in the wet on tarmac for a while if you've never driven on off-road tyres before. Caught me out the first time and that was in an N/A diesel, I imagine you could get into lots of trouble very quickly with a V8!

Agreed.

I may change the tyres to something less aggressive for everyday driving (probably some 265s BFGs)?

Makes a big difference, ride comfort, grip and road noise is much better on normal road tyres. It makes the steering more direct too.

Just be slightly aware that, when picking road tyres, wider is not automatically better. Wider tyres are less resistant to aquaplaning (not much weight over the back wheels in a SWB defender) and, generally, the steering will be better with thinner tyres. The car will wonder and follow cambers less and the steering will feel a bit more 'positive' with more self centering on narrower wheels.

Just thinking, if you have a separate set for off-roading you can pick what's best for tarmac, which might be a bit thinner then 265? I'm, sure others will know more, I've only driven Series3's.

Very nice, although that's not an RR 3.5 unless the carbs have been swapped over. RR's ran Strombergs not SU's.

If you want to liven it up at all, look at a cam swap and maybe converting to EFI via Megasquirt, although it might be simpler to buy a 3.9 motor to do this to and then swap in.

Thanks guys - all great stuff (keep 'em coming)!

I had BFGs on my old TDi 200 and found them to be a good tyre (tarmac/mild off road).

I think the BFG 265/70 16s were standard fitment on the 50th Anniversary?

Ah, fair enough. You know more then I do then.

Nice pics, makes me want to get my series3 out (need to fix the exhaust first though).
