That looks great. How many miles has it done? Interior is in good condition.

85k on it. Exterior is equally good, only paint it's seen is the front bumper. I've a keen eye for bodywork and i'm confident the rest is original. Engine has had a refresh by hartec including IMS etc (invoice for £6700) so it's given me peace of mind.

Keith
Sounds spot on, are you planning on keeping it on a maintenance plan such as Hartech's?

That's a lovely example. And hands up if you think those wheels are the nicest Porsche have ever done? thumbup Watch out as they corrode like no one's business though!

Anyone any advice on tyres? I just need rears soon, Should I stick with N4 rated P-zero's @ £460 delivered & £10 fitted. Or Toyo Proxie TR-1's for £320 + £10 fitting?

Keith
Replaced my P-Zeros about 9mths ago with PS2s - seem to be what everybody recommended & I have no complaints apart from the price (£800ish for the 4, fitted)!

Hi Keith and welcome to Porker ownership.

That looks like a great car to cut your teeth on - great value Porsche that can be used every day.

Personally, I would stick to N rated tyres. Most major tyre manufacturers do N rated tyres.

N rated basically conform to Porsche specification. Running non Porsche spec tyres, although probably just as good could cause issues with insurance companies if they wanted to find a reason not to pay out after an accident.

Try and get the same Manufacturer/Tyre Model/N rating all round or at worst, the same Manufacturer/Tyre Model/N rating on each axle. The N number just denotes the spec. which goes up by year so for example, N1 were earlier than N2 which was earlier than N3 etc.

This looks really great. I like the painted centre console and seat-backs. This must be one of the nicest 996's I have ever seen. If a cooking 996 could turn into a classic, it is yours thumbup

Actually I don't think it is! I have been told the same thing by a few insurance people come renewal time. As always the answer is to check the small print!

cmoose is correct, N ratings don't matter a jot when it comes to insurance, they only matter if you want the Porsche extended warranty.

ETA Congrats on the new car thumbup

Congratulations on your beautiful 996, seems like a very good buy and I hope it offers you much fun and a proper 'Porsche' experience. I reckon that an original well cared for early 996 is on good track to become a bit of a calssic (but not necessarily in value, alas).

Out of curiosity, what was done to the engine in the £6k and was there any failure or was it just 'preventive'?

I will need rear tyres soon, currently on N4 rated P Zero's. Anyone know the deal with the N rated tyres? I always ran toyo proxie TR-1 on other cars and like them.
My car came with Pirelli N4s on, swapped to Falken FKs a few months back, can't tell difference between the N4s and FKs yet saved myself a bundle. Not just me either, FKs are a pretty popular option for a 996 at the moment on PH and 911UK.

Just to add: FK452s (18") worked well on my old 986S Boxster - as good as Pilot Sports for me and Mrs B.

Go to Event Tyres mate. I had them fit boots to my 996 and they were great.

Should get a set for about £450
