986 Boxster S with a couple of goodies or a straight out the box Z3M Roadster?

Weekend Hoon car with a European trip thrown in.

Which would you pick and why?

Z3m no doubt about it at all. Its just a more special rarer car which will hold its value better than the mass produced pork.

I'm surprised by this! I would have thought it was a no-brainer in favour of the BMW.

Rare, great noise and a bit more fun to drive. I never enjoyed the Boxster, I found it a bit anodyne- too neutral. I appreciate it's subjective, but I like my cars a bit lairier.

What about a Z3M Coupe? Would certainly be a better investment....almost zero deprecation now I would think!

Might get one within budget with a bit of negotiation...

I wouldn't let the rarity argument of the ZM influence you until it's time to sell. To most other road users it is just another modified Z3. On the other hand, other road users know you are in a Porsche when you are in the Boxster.

If you want to compare performance - I don't know what the Boxster is like.

but I've got an M Roadster and it goes like stink biggrin and sounds awesome.

With the M Roadster you get one of these:

or these:

For purity of drive I expect the Porsche to be better. For all out RWD banter, you'd be hard pushed to get better than the BMW. Even better in coupe form imo.

Would love a Z3M and thought about it. Just bought a 986 S for a chunk less than your budget. See the poverty pork thread in the Porsche section. What goodies would you want?

Has to be a 'vert. Will only be kept for the summer and then chopped in for probably a 964 C4.

986S I'd change the suspension and the exhaust and maybe a couple of engine parts.

Z3MR i'd give it straight pipes and that's about it.

I'd lose more on the Boxster when i come to sell it i reckon.

Boxster for the mid-engined dynamics.
Z3M for the engine and 'rarity' if that's your thing.

If it was the coupe I'd go for the Z3M. As it is I'd go for the Boxster S, preferably with some suitably ostentatious pale leather and moderately-discrete sports exhaust.

I am a BMW man through and through but I would opt for the Boxster S over the Z3M. Ive had both and the Z3 just doesnt feel as good as the Boxster when driven at pace. If you get the S50 then you'd be without traction and, in one of those, you need it yet in the Boxster you wont need the traction as its so much more predictable and controllable.
Is 10k going to push to a 987S yet or not??

A £10k 986 Boxster will shed a lot of money, quickly.

I'd suggest scraping together a few more pennies for a 987 if you can, or spending less on a 986.

That's great value, I had a 3.0si at the same time as my 986 S (which i've still got) the Z4 was a very good car, reasonably quick, decent handling, quite refined, sounded ok and was relatively economical.

I just didn't love it though, it didn't feel special and i neevr became attached to it, hence why i've still got the Boxster and have sold the Z4. I'd still recommend trying one to anyone though
