996 turbo won't start
Discussion
Hi all, if anyone can shed any light on what this may be i'd appreciate it. I'm thinking starter motor myself but here goes.
Drove the car Last Sat night with no probs. Got in it Tuesday morning and when i turned the key it made a slight attempt to turn over(about 2 seconds) and then nothing. All you hear when you turn the key is a clonk which i assume is the starter. All the lights etc work ok. I tested the battery and it was 12.01v. Put batt on charge for 24hrs and tried this morning and nothing. Batt tested at 12.3v after charge so i think this is on its way out. I tried another battery which had a charge of 12.99v and still nothing.
Cheers

Try jumping it off something with a little beans, the extra omph might get the starter moving, if that does not work try tapping the starter motor with a jack handle.
Cheers for the info Vixpy1. Jump did nothing so i tried a new bosch battery and still nothing. I've done the mallet on the starter on my old transit before and it worked, where is the starter on this? i cant get a jack under it at the moment to look as its on deep gravel and its pissing down. I need to get it pulled out onto the concrete but the towing eye is missing from the toolkit too. CheersDan

Cheers Martian, i'll look into it. The problem was a seized starter motor. When it was removed you could not turn it with your hand and it had a hole in the solenoid casing. It's been sent away for a rebuild and i hope to get it back monday. I opted for the rebuild after buying a second hand "996 turbo starter motor in excellent condition" from ebay. This fitted and would have worked had it been 30mm shorter in the body. It touched the gear linkage. The original Bosch was 155mm from flange to end of the body. I had quotes for 150 delivered for brand new units(not Bosch) but when asked for the measurments they were all 200mm so worse than the one i bought.
