I'm sitting here idly browsing eBay for suitable barges to scratch a certain itch. But what would you actually classify as a barge?

Obviously the usual mercs, but what about a C class? A passat? Rover 600 / 800 / 75?

Where is the family saloon / barge line drawn?

For me it'd have to meet the following criteria:

- Big Saloon or Estate (5 series / E class / LS400 etc.. upwards)
- Pretty luxurious (Comfy seats, Leather seats, Electric everything)
- A fraction of it's original cost
- This point is not really necessary but a nice 6/8 cylinder with plenty of shove is ideal for me.

But that's just my take. smile

ETA - Thinking about it, maybe I'm just a Luxo-barge kind of a man! I would happily consider the likes of Honda Legacy's, Rover 600s/800s/75s, etc..

I'd still count my Rover 600 as a 'mini barge (if that makes sense!) it feels spacious inside, plenty of leather, wood and so on.. maybe its more about how the car 'feels'. Interestingly, a Mercedes 190 is around the same length as the VW Eos, but would feel far more like a barge. Generally, I think cars of the size of a Passat etc as you've mentioned are where the line is drawn

Simple - post it in the Best Barge thread, and you'll quickly discover if it doesn't qualify.

IMHO there is bangernomics and there are barges. Not mutually exclusive but not the same.

What rob is describing is a barge not a banger . Come on someone , definitions please smile

not fwd.

not for driving dynamics - just anything that I'd consider a barge doesn't come on a fwd platform. I know that excludes some a6s and volvos, but I think they're closer to family cars anyway

No worries - probably not the best choice of term on my part anyway.
