Rear Crank Oil Seal - Options For Repair
Discussion
I just took the Chim out of winter hibernation and noticed a small patch of oil on the garage floor. After getting it up on the ramp at a friends MOT centre and removing the cover from the bell housing it seems the oil is coming from the back of the engine and my first assumption was rear crank oil seal.
If this is the case, is this a job that can be untertaken by my local garage (not back street but modern prmisies and vey competeant) or should I only really use a reputable TVR specialist?
I an based in Lincolnshire not far from Grimsby and the closest specialist I know of is Selby TVR www.selbytvr.co.uk
Could the oil be coming from anywhere else, any comments / advice welcome.
I want to get it done soon as I am avoiding driving it for fear of knackering up the clutch with oil!

We only had a quick look on the ramp as the test station was busy, I will get it back and have another much closer look. So from what you are saying it would be possible for oil to get into the bell housing from the rear of the sump and seep out of the lower rubber cover?
I hope this is the case too :-)

Yes, but if there is that much oil in there it would be worth taking the two bottom screws out of the plate to let the oil out until you get it sorted, before it gets to the clutch. The best advice i could give would be to give it a good clean and leave the plate off the bellhousing and give it a run and re-check for the leak. 9 times out of 10 it is usually just the sump sealant has got old and is leaking.
If it does turn out to be the rear crank oil seal then the gearbox and bellhousing will have to be removed to replace the seal and the only awkward part of the job for a garage would be removing the gear linkage if it is the older style linkage on a T5 gearbox, it can just be a little bit fiddly. But to remove all of the different gearlever's the centre console will have to be removed.

Just had the exact same problem. Thought at first it was the rear seal. Then thought it was the sump (which was leaking a touch).
Turned out to be the valley gasket, it was leaking at the ends where the seal had gone hard but it wasnt obvious where the oil was coming from until it was all cleaned up.

Was that a big job to put right?Turned out to be the valley gasket, it was leaking at the ends where the seal had gone hard but it wasnt obvious where the oil was coming from until it was all cleaned up.

Yep.
rocker covers off, plenum off etc - basically you've got to get down to the valley between the banks , then its a huge gasket to replace.
Maybe not as bad as the rear crank oil seal, at least I will know tomorrow and can get it sorted asap, then I can get on with the list of jobs I need to do before the season starts in anger.rocker covers off, plenum off etc - basically you've got to get down to the valley between the banks , then its a huge gasket to replace.
Oh the joys of TVR ownership :-)
