What's is the purpose of this bit of rubber/plastic?

It's quite discolored/distorted on my car - can I just take it off or would i need to get a new one? If i need to replace it what would it be called?

Cheers,

Without it you'd be looking at a nut. Some back to black (or olive oil) should get the colour back nicely.

Hi Andy, do you mean the trim on the top of the glass?

I think its aluminium coated black??? Is it there to stop the glass hitting the roof if other parts failed?

Cheers

I had the same problem with mine but with grease and oil it will shine as new.

Initially I asked my TVR specialist if it could be removed and the strongly recommended against it since the chance of it looking ugly underneath is high. Their theory was that it was for protection of the glass against for instances stone chips although they did agree it to be highly unlikely any stone would ever hit the window there.
