I have a slight shortage of space in my small unit, and was thinking about rigging up something to hoist my brian james trailer up into the roof to allow me a little more space. Anyone done anything similar. I think it weighs about 500kg so cant decide if I should use 1 hoist and attach a chain to each corner, or multiple.... or if its just a bad idea smile

See no reason why not, we used to lift our boats up all the time.

From memory there was a boat winch, as commonly found on the front of trailers, bolted down to an old heavy bench, and the wire ran though to the top of the rafters where it went over a pully and came down again. You could lift things up as far as the horizonal beams and then strap them on there to take the weight off the winch.

A single wire should be okay, hook on the end and 3 or 4 small chains to hold the trailer. Just make sure that everything is spec'd as heavy as you want. No point saving a few quid only to have a 500kg trailer fall onto whatever is below it.

No idea of the spec., but Lidls have a electric hoist on offer just now.

Hope this helps.

Sounds likea good idea as long as everything is spec'd accordingly.

Now, instead of the threaded bar (which was a pain to fit) its strapped up with 4 x 50mm Ratchet straps, one on each corner which are wrapped around the trailer then the `I` beams. The electric winch at the front is left connected, as are the 2 x 1Te lifting blocks at the rear.

Overkill ? Yeah, but the last thing I want is it falling...

The firstphoto and the one quoted above was for the first attempt using a central lifting position, which was then secured by the threaded bar at each corner. It was secure but took some time to fit properly. The new method only takes minutes, is much more secure and is the only way I could store a trailer.

I thought about standing it on its end, but with a brian james the ramps stick out so its not really a flat surface.

and you cant really stand it on its side either.

I need to get my racevan in as well so trailer on the roof, van under it.

....and another. 2 of us get it up there and secured in about 5 mins. Clearing all the crap out underneath and getting the trailer in and out takes a little longer.

A pair of 240v electric winches bolted to a large metal frame (which is secured to the walls/beams), you can see one of the legs by the winch control. Frame also has some arms to hold the trailer when it's up there.
