Don't need it but want 0-60 in 3.8s and 29mpg

I know the CL of this age was right when MB were at their lowest quality wise.

A rare car, but if your main motivations for buying it are the stats you mention, I would look into them a little deeper, because I think they are both highly questionable. Both the later CL55K and CL600 Bi-turbo have more power and can't match that 0-60 time, so unless it's something to do with gearing or being able to put the power down, no way. As for 29 MPG, I doubt that too. I just can't see the value in this particular early model, over and above the two others I've mentioned, unless you are craving exclusivity. Even then, only a true beard would realise what you had. All IMHO of course! smile

Hitting 60 in under four seconds is very difficult.

I have owned many performance cars that were literally a few tubes clothed in fibreglass with a 4.2 V8 up front which could not achieve this figure. Or get near it. Getting the power on the road is the problem. Traction is the key.

Despite weighing in at a fraction of this car.

If you like it go for it. You only live once why not enjoy yourself?

But hitting 60 in under 4 seconds? Easy on paper VERY difficult in practice.

Such a car could really make a difference to your motoring pleasure.

It could also cast shadows over your licence.

Up to you. Good Luck anyway, at least its not boring.

99,998 miles...its tempting to pop along for a quick 3 mile test drive!

I clicked through the link onto the dealer's website where there are more photos, a video and further description of the service history. There's plenty of history there, but an awful lot of work in the last 10k miles. Does that mean its all sorted, or that the last owner got shot of it before another four figure bill arrived...?

Looks lovely though, and there is a photo of the trip computer: 37miles/35mins/63mph average speed/29mpg, which is obviously the best you will ever get out of it you are very restrained, but still quite impressive.

Just buy it and run a Readers' Cars thread on it so we all know if this is a good idea at youe expense! hehe

That was for sale privately for nearly a year priced up and down like a yo-yo from £14,000 up to £19,000 then last month, was £10,500 or something on ebay and here before being sold.

Agree with the above comments on stats - even the CL65 monsters cannot hit those times.

The stats are plain wrong (apart from the 444bhp) albeit is still a fast car. I have back at home a Car magazine road test of the exceptionally rare w215 C63 AMG and I will check the figures this weekend if you like. From limited internet research, it looks like 0-62.5mph takes 5.5seconds. Only 26 of these were built.

These cars feature a development of the normally aspirated M137 V12 engine. In stock form this has a capacity of 5.8 litres and a power output of 367bhp; here it is 6.3litres and 444bhp. The M137 V12 is not without its detractors. The two big risks are an oil cooler leak and a coil pack failure. The oil cooler is located under the inlet manifold in the engine's "vee"; fixing a leak requires removal of both heads. The coil packs cost about £800 each (there are two albeit they fail one at a time). That said, AMG-built motors tend to be more reliable than stock motors.

Mercland is a reputable vendor. The proprietor seems to be a genuine enthusiast.

Personally I think it is over-priced, especially at that mileage. You're well into CL600 Bi Turbo money there: a faster car with a more reliable motor, more reliable systems and less rust-prone bodywork. Not so rare and, of course, normally aspirated has a certain purity that forced-induction lacks.

Wikipedia states that the W215 CL63 AMG is 3.8s to 60, saying that it also says it is a V8

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mercedes-Benz_CL-Clas...

The torque figure of 730NM is impressive though. Depends what you believe is true. Wikipedia is a great idea but prone to errors and cannot always be trusted.

As for 29MPG I can get that out of my DB9 if I am taking a steady drive about 60MPH so it is possible and that doesn't shut down cylinders.

I also like the look of this older merc SEC

Maximum torque on the w215 CL63 AMG is 620NM and it's a V12.

You'll not get 29mpg in normal use. You might get it if you join a quiet dual carriageway, set the cruise to 60, reset the trip computer and then drive extremely sedately for 30miles. In normal use you'll get 18 to 25mpg, probably 21.

The first thing I would do on buying this car is have the cylinder deactivation function deactivated (on a STAR machine) as it is generally considered that it is this feature which leads to coil pack failure.

The second thing I'd do is get rid of those window tints.

The third thing I'd do is drive it very fast to Geneva (or possibly the Cote d'Azur) in one stint.

At the right price, it's a really interesting car.
