Is there a good reason why Porsche insist on using big old fashioned keys?

The new 991 key is a transponder type thingy and looks like a childs car toy. You wouldn't want to slap that on the bar at anytime! biggrin

The 991 keys are not big and old fashioned, they are relatively small and horribly blingy. They are also quite susceptible to damage.

I fell on my keys during the icy weather and scuffed the chrome bit on th 991 keys, it wasn't very tough and looked horrible afterwards. Unfortnately it wasn't MY 991, it was OPC Nottingham's, though they were very good about it.

So does the bottom button open the engine cover??? Or have they made a mistake??? Surely it should open the luggage compartment at the front!

It's not a proper Porsche key if it doesn't open the windows and/or the boot without warning from within your pocket...

Interesting, all my other vehicles including my vans don't have the old fashioned metal bit sticking out the end, hence me wondering why Porsche keys (obviously the 991 excluded now) do, I thought they might of had some proof that the old fashioned type were higher security or something. And yep agree, don't like the new type.

I much prefer it to my Range Rover key. It doesn't go in a keyhole it just needs to be in your pocket.

Trouble is, it weighs the same as a medium-sized dog and if you don't want to have the hefty thing in your pocket it needs to go somewhere with your other keys where they rattle about and scratch whatever they are near. Ideally there would be a hole in the dashboard where it could be poked and then twisted to start the engine (instead of having a separate button).

I have that with my RR key, but just leave it in my pocket at all times, but we have the keyless entry which obviously makes it easier as you don't have to use it. Have to agree though that the black glossy plastic is ste and scuffs and scratches unless you keep it in a hermetically sealed, air suspended environment.
