Short story, i live next to a field in the country. No problems in 18 months since i moved in, but a few weeks ago whilst in bed i heard scurrying along the wooden boards in the loft. i ignored it for a couple of weeks but it became a daily occurance.

I put a trap up their which catches them live and i didnt want to kill anything. I decided to take action when i saw they had been tearing away at a cardboard box.

Aside from stting all over the inside of the trap (honestly, how could something so small st so much?) i caught two of these in the last 12 hours;

They're tiny.

Anyway, i drove about a male away, further into the country, and kicked them out in a laybay next to a field and they ran into it.

I never heard more than one so to catch 2 in 12 hours is a bit worrying. I cannot find at all how they are getting in, but they are so small it could be anywhere.

I reckon if i catch a 3rd im gonna have to start setting poison arent i? frown

For every one you see there are 3 that you dont.

Kill them or block their entry point.

They can get in through the tiniest gaps too.

Recording of an owl screeching, played at random times should see them off.

yes I live in a grade II listed thatched cottage, and it's effectively impossible to exclude them. It's seasonal - we don't get many in summer but I average maybe 2-3 a week in the traps when they come in winter, looking for food and warmth.

That is pretty cute as vermin go.

We had mice at the old house - I think I live trapped three or four and let them go in a cow shed at the other end of the village. We only found out we had them, though, when we bought a big bag of cat biscuits in anticipation of the arrival of a kitten, and left it out on the kitchen floor overnight. I think the ones that got trapped and evicted were probably the lucky ones. When the kitten arrived, he got under the kitchen units on the first night, looking for the mice I think.

Reminds me of the time we caught one in our kitchen and the Wife and I took it to the top of the garden that backed onto some farmers field full of sheep and let it go.

Out it jumped and off it ran.

We turned to faced the house and walked back only to be over taken by the mouse hopping through the grass and popping back in through the french doors.

Kind of like it's style.

I cleared our garage last year and put some bait down as the blighters had been nesting under the motorcycle seat.

Went for a ride , came back, went to get my wallet and there was a mouse who had been to Bognor for the morning run with me.

After the area was baited , there were 7 corpses the next morning ! At least one of them got to see what 1.5 looked like biggrin

Used to have a place adjacent to a farm. The mice would come in and die under the floorboards. After 3 days, you really needed to find the corpse, which involved lifting boards and searching. Cat was useless. 99pence "little nipper" traps. Sometimes caught 2 a day, and the only downside was prising them off the spike. After a while the problem went away.smile

I had the little devils living the engine bay,put a trap on the air cleaner and caught 3, they had started destroying the insulation on the bulkhead. Biggest worry was them eating the wiring.

But as stated field mice do at least go away in the better weather.

It is a little known fact that mice are in fact petrolheads at heart and all you dummies taking them out for a spin really are looking for trouble if they talk to their mates.

MX5 owners excluded.

You need one of these

rapid rat/mouse killing machines Ltd ,
or a non ball bearing mouser ( commonly called a she cat) .
I prefer the former. And I have seen this bloke dispatch a few mice ,for all his sleepy looks, large size and vintage years .And on a coold night in the winter, he can keep the bottom of the bed very warm, something moggy can't do .Central heating on at night.NO.he's got a coat to protect him to the ice age,and he'll pass on his heat to those he loves
I had problems with field mice using next doors garden ,till I got him.Since then -no sign of field mice . Suspect they know of the danger and have gone elsewhere .
I've caught a few ,but had to use very sensitive traps. my son ,living across the road had similar problems which he couldn't cure ,despite a Staffie. I lent him my traps and he did get some .

one of these

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MV9woxUshuA&

you can have all kinds of fun , either filling the bottom with straw = humane release into the wild ( 2 miles away )

Fill the bottom with water .............
fill the bottom with treacle / syrup / veg oil ........better way to drown
stick your pet tarantula in the bottom .........

imo use peanut butter on the edge it attracts mice
