I’m looking for a low pressure gas strut with an overall length of 520mm (overall, not pivot pin centre to centre). It’s been suggested a Chim boot lid strut would fit the bill. Can anyone confirm the length and if it is 520mm, does anyone have one going spare? Thanks in advance.

I have a used spare boot strut from a Mk 4 golf which is one of a pair I bought to renew the one on my Chimaera, it measures 522mm including the fittings that came with it.
You are welcome to it if you want it.

Is it the Mk4 fittings that are used on the Chim too or do you need to transfer the old fittings over to the new strut?

I'm fitting it to the bonnet on a V8S using Jag pivot pins. HarrySTG is sending me one so it looks like I'm sorted. Thanks to all for the responses.

Be Careful ,my gas strut went stiff and ended up warping the boot lid ..
Been off now for around a year and it seems to be going back to its original shape..
Seems a lot of pressure on the boot lid when its closed, especially when the catch is in the middle off the boot.

I used the ones of the Golf strut, the threads arent compatible with the chimaera one.
It was virtually a stright swap, just adjusted the pivots with a couple of washers.

Could someone check their boot strut for the thrust value of the standard strut? (It should be printed on the side of the cylinder as a number followed by "N".)

The one I've just fitted is a 500N unit and the one that came off was a 250N unit ... the 500N one doesn't feel *THAT* heavy or stiff.

I recently got one of the sgs ones. Very good in my opinion and took about 30 seconds to fit.

500 sounds a lot?

The tailgate on my taimar (big window, much heavier than a bootlid) has two 350's

You can roughly check them by pushing against a set of scales, if it is a 250 the piston should start to compress at about 56 lbs, and if its a 500 scales will go up to 112 lbs before anything moves.

This system worked well for me, tailgate wouldn't quite stay up and my calculations put the struts at about 300n (68 lbs to move them). bought the 350's and it stays up a treat!

Haha, yea i'll try to remember mate, she is quite a distraction though. Is it just the force reading you need or is there anything else ? It'll probably be tomorrow that i can check it.

Yeah - I'd seen the URL for the replacement one but I'd already ordered up a Mk4 Golf strut (which is the 500N one) ... basically, if it's about right then I'll leave it on but if it's massively over then I'll replace it...

Of course if you want I could pop over and read it off myself ... see if we can get your friend down again. biggrin

Of course as my roof is always off and it would be looking like rain you'd have to let me park undercover ...

... that'd be bloody noisy! hehe

Hi Phil,

I don't think this is really going to help you but here we go anyway ..

You got any idea how to fix the cord going to the door from the opening thing inside ? I'm stumped. Might have to give Str8six a call.

Actually, that photo gives you all you need to order an exact same unit.
You see the very top line code beginning GS8.....
This tells the maker the size of the unit including bore and stroke and the pressure (250N)
