Hi guys,

bought a 2001 4.0 X308 XJ yesterday and although I think I've perhaps been fleeced it is a very nice car. It's a 2 owner car with just 60K miles, serviced annually every 5K miles at either main dealer or independent.

Test drove car when I bought and it drove fine, also drove fine on the motorway home.

Infact, it's 100% fine at small/mid throttle openings. When you do try and gun the car it is very hesitant and lathargic and mis-fires. If you "make it have it" in throws up the "reduced performance" error and brings the check engine light on.

Quickly called past my mechanic mate this afternoon who has read the codes and it's lean running on both banks.

He's had a quick look (was short of time) and there are no obvious air leaks of split hoses etc.

Any thoughts? MAF or throttle body?

At tick over engine sounds fine and there are no rattles etc from top end.

Thanks guys. It's booked in on Wednesday for my mechanic's auto electrician mate to have a look who apparently has some very decent diagnostic gear which can track whats happening in real time.

If this doesn't point to anything I'll book it into a local Jag specialist.

Hoping is isn't going to be too expensive!!

Rear suspension bushes - I'll wager that's what the rattle will be...

Might just be the exhaust, heat shield or something?
