I am a complete novice when it comes to HD TVs. I havent bought a new TV in 16 years and although my 32" Sony flatscreen is still going strong I want to upgrade to HD. I have just upgraded to Sky+ HD and got a 5.1 surround system ready for the F1.
I have just had a look at the TVs in Currys and am totally confused. When I bought the last TV the only choice was the size, now there are plasma, LED, LCD, 3D etc. Which of these is best? Also what makes are good to go for? I am tempted by another Sony as my current TV has lasted so well but they seem more expensive than other makes. Are they still worth the extra? The surrond system I bnought is Sony too so I don't know if the Bravia range integrates with the better.

That looks to be a very good primer. Aside from the size and type of screen, think what else you want to do with it - connectivity is the big thing with TVs now.

Definitely make sure it is 1080p! Some sets are HD TV's and branded that way but are only 720p. The difference is huge.
I think other than that, it depends how much you can afford, my LED LG is pretty amazing, until watching my dad's Sony Bravia. The difference being the Sony is about £600 more than what I paid for the LG.

Thanks for this. Although the article doesn't say one is better than the other in so many words it still would seem plasma is the way to go.That looks to be a very good primer.
