personally would go for later model x300.
i used to have one .....very heavy old motor and if your handy with a spanner then you can maintain yourself. maybe i was being a bit harsh if you can find a minter then very tempting but you will pay for a good one.
go for the 4.2 or again if you can afford the maintenance then the v12...WOW

X300s were 3.2, 40 & 6.0 V12s. The Series cars had a 4.2 engine choice.

The Series 3s are a nice cars, this one is expensive but looks very good http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/JAGUAR-XJ6-4-2-AUTO-SALO...

looks a nice car but thinking back to the one i had that was an 84/85 model an an A plate and i had to retro fit rear belts.
the one advertised doesnt appear to have them either nor rear headrests.
nb my old one was A999 NDB would be good if it had survived all these years. i sold it to a guy from notts by the name of tiny, i remember as he paid me half cash and half cheque and i let him take the car on trust.......and yes the cheque did clear.

And then there was also the VDP.

My Uncle ran one of these from new, a retirement treat, through to when his knees could no longer cope with bending down to enter and exit at which point he was forced to switch to an old man's car (aka 5 series). Sadly back then we saw very little of each other due to time pressures, and so he didn't know how interested I'd become in Jaguars and I didn't know he was thinking of selling it.

Really glorious car. I'd have bought his like a shot if I'd known.

Whilst I absolutely love the S3, they become a serious liability once they get neglected. Unless you can do a lot of jobs yourself, they can cost £££ to fix at garages. My dad has had a S1and an S3, and spent hours underneath them both. Having said that, once I have a decent place to garage one, I'll have one in an instant.

They are a lovely old thing, albeit horrendously unreliable if neglected.

The truly remarkable thing about them is that they drive and handle like a sports car, not a wafty old saloon. I would avoid the 3.4 as it is no more economical than the 4.2, has a nasty poverty spec and wouldn't pull a greased stick out of a pigs arse. The ideal is a late 5.3.

The series III is a wonderful car. I learnt to drive in one and recently restored/modernised that same car back to tip top health. Whether you buy a 6 or 12, make sure you find yourself a decent independant specialist. Take a look at mine, I get very positive comments every time I drive it.

That's not a standard front valence is it? I can't decide whether I like it or not, although I'm sure it helps reduce lift at naughty speeds. smile

Thanks Six, I think so too!
Groomi, that's an Arden front lip, suppose to cut lift at speed, but I fitted it because it tidied up the front end. The wheels are 16" x 7" XJ40 items, steering and arches were modified to take these. The lip is very effective at channeling air to the front brakes, now I just need to concentrate on kgetting the rears cool as at Goodwood they do overheat a tad.... Now its time to get her ready for the Le Mans Classic... 8 MPG anyone....

Just put mine up for sale. It's in very good conditon and I doubt there's a better one for the price.

The car was owned for more than twenty years by a Jaguar technician who works for a top Jaguar restoration company. I bought it directly from him.

I took it to France last year and it drove really well.

I'm only selling it because my Mk2 is now in regular use and I can't afford to keep them both.

Now that is just plain unfair, that car is gorgeous, but I'm already having to replace B8's MB, Tony has been sorely tempting me with an XKSS and my X300 is already starting to be treated more like a classic.
So many cars and just no where to keep them and nothing to buy them all with.
