First off, the search isn't working so I appreciate this may have been covered many times before, but, if I tax my car online, legally, am I ok to drive it straight away even though I won't have the tax disc for a few days?

If I print off the conformation page would this be sufficient if I was pulled over for not displaying a tax disc?

Just it's a really sunny and warm day and the Mini is in the garage raring to go.

Read the tax-it-online website (AKA DVLA)!

I believe you only get a few days grace if it's a straightforward renewal. Changing from SORN to taxed doesn't count, which I assume is what you're doing.

Gotta love these new-fangled regulations which have successfully cleared our streets of un-taxed, uninsured cars in one easy rule!

I think you get a week or so allowance, I tax mine online and remember something along those lines.

You get a 5 days grace period

but in the days of policing by numbers you can get away with it a lot longer

I forgot to put the tax disc in the landrover for 4 months

Cheers, it's taxed now, having read the FAQ it suggests that the 5 days grace is only for reewing a tax disc that's about to expire as mentioned above. I'll leave it until I get the disc to be on the safe side. Hopefully it'll be here by Friday when I have a day off.

In exactly the same situation as you with my Stag. Fixed it yesterday, insured, MOT, taxed but no disc.

I'm not going to risk it, but ireckon the chances of getting caught and then, even if you are caught, getting actually done for it are pretty low. Wouldn't want to have an accident with no tax disc though, main thing stopping me.

I was under the impression that failure to display a valid tax disc was an offence in itself.

So even if the car is taxed you can be done for not displaying a disc.

Yeah I'm a bit apprehensive, it hasn't moved since October so I suppose another few days won't hurt.

If the car is SORN'd or the tax has expired then the 5 days "grace" does not apply.

Fine for failure to display £60 and no points

Not exactly world ending

I took my AMG out of storage a week ago, and taxed it yesterday. I've been driving it around without a disc the whole time - I figure that given I am not actually ever driving the car without a tax disc (as the one I have bought starts on 1 March, obviously) that I'd have a fairly good story to tell if pulled over.

Am I right in thinking that councils can issue penalty notices for failure to display these days, just like parking tickets?

Honestly wouldn't worry about it. I normally tax the car and while I wait for the disk print out the confirmation and leave it on my dash when out and about where my tax disk is with my personal details edited out.

Not had any issues yet.

I hope we'll soon be able to do the same in northern ireland. I know there'll be plenty who disagree with me but it seriously pisses me off when civil service jobs are put ahead of convenient public services http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-northern-ireland-1706...

How long do they take to come through? I'll be unSORNing mine next week and I'm dying to go for a blast!
