Have Mercedes CLK 55 AMGs been invisible?
Discussion
I just found myself looking at this:

http://www.pistonheads.com/sales/3489152.htm
It's a Mercedes CLK 55 AMG.
You can tell because the advertisement states: Mercedes CLK 55 AMG.
Anyway, why has this car remained so far off my radar?
The stats look good for a brisk cruiser - especially if I could find one without a lid, right?
Comparable to a BMW 330 Cab or am I lusting up the wrong car tree?
Bye.

A mate owns one. He reckons it's more in the e39 M5 league for straight-line performance.
I've never been in it mind.
E34 M5 straight line performance perhaps, E39, not quite. especially north of 100. the E39 has over 15% more power...I've never been in it mind.
they are reasonably nice cars; but i've been put off by mercs since my dads '06 CLK cab which was the later model than that. was brand new at 48k when he bought it, was utterly, utterly dreadful.
I like these. I was considering a non-AMG version not that long ago but I'm not a fan of autos and if you can find a manual you have to deal with the foot operated parking brake. Oh and the rust. Next door have an E class of similar vintage and it's looking a bit crispy round the edges...

I don't think the parking brake is an issue to get used to, press left foot instead of pull left hand. I think you'd prefer an auto to a Merc manual - they're not know for their manuals and they're not clever.
I think the CLK is a dreadful car IMO, I've been in quite a few including both coupe and convertible and I just don't find the car all that nice. The interior quality feels as if a 4 year old has put it together, the car is incredibly cramped in both coupe and convertible form, and while the 320 has 220bhp, it just don't feel as if its moving at all, before people start saying its meant to feel like that because its a Merc, with other Mercs I can feel the cars power. I would stay away from these cars if I were you.

Certainly doesn't sound like you've been in a CLK, interior quality is one of its best points and certainly isn't cramped either for a coupe. If anything it's let down by being heavy and barge-like, not a B road blaster but then it was never meant to be.I've had one. Certainly not ugly - it's too subtle to be ugly.
Thirsty? It's got a 5.5 litre V8 so it's like being surprised that cats have 4 legs. I have had about 35mpg once.
You won't find a manual, red CLK55 AMG convertible because none were made. They're all semi-automatic coupes and mainly come in silver but there are a few black ones out there.
Straight-line acceleration is good but you find you're breaking the speed limit very easily because you really don't notice how fast you're going as you do feel like you're in a cocoon. Someone once called it the AMG effect.
Handling? Well, it's no Lotus Elise but I never had any mishaps with it. At 1800kg don't expect it to behave like an Elise.
Reliability: well, that's a sore point. Considering the original price (~£60k or more depending on the options), the materials are good but the build and reliability is not good.
