New to me - Audi A4 2.8 30v V6 (B5)
Discussion
Thread updated 30/09/2012
So I've moved on from my first car (Seat Ibiza) to something a little bigger, an Audi A4.
While the Seat was a great little car, my driving has become mostly long distance stuff between home and university, which is a 250 mile trip. When you're doing that kind of mileage on the motorway, small engines just don't cut it IMO, the 1.2 Seat would sit a 3500rpm at 70 and with a fair bit of road/wind noise, you knew you'd done the journey by the end of it. So I wanted something bigger, more refined, and more powerful.
I ended up with this particular example as myself and fellow PHer McSam knew the car already as he owned it for a week last summer (long story)
There are a few things to do but I see it as an ongoing project, getting it to just how I want it. The interior especially could do with a good clean, might even try to find a leather interior to fit. I also already have a set of facelift headlights to fit, just need to sort the wiring.
Anyway, a few pics

Need to find an Audi badge for the boot

Fitted the Pioneer head unit last week to replace the ancient Alpine that was in there, got bluetooth hands free built in. The blank button with the holes in will be drilled so I can mount the mic for the phone in it.

Finally, the important bit

30 valves of fantastic noise! The K&N helps that a bit, was already fitted to the car but don't really have any desire to remove it.
Enjoying the car so far, the novelty of how it gains pace compared to the 3-cyl hatch I had before will not wear off in a hurry. Also enjoy the fact that our student house now has 2 V6 Audis sitting outside
I'll keep this updated with any work that's done, any comments welcome

Lovely shots, mate, she scrubs up nicely! It takes a man of outstanding taste to source a car like that..
Front-wheel-drive one, this, Bork - meaning 150kg lighter and yes, bloody sharp on the throttle!

Watch out for odd tyre ware though, IIRC they were set up by the factory with odd geo which leads to uneven wear on the rears.
Hmm - do you know any more about this? As I recall from the last time I had my '96 checked over, I have something like 4.5 degrees toe in on each rear wheel.Hasn't been shunted has it?
Jw, yes it is pretty nippy, the 30v 2.8s put out 190bhp and 207lbft and it weighs just under 1300kg. There's a slight jerk at 5500rpm when the cams comes on song, by which point it's singing beautifully!
Should have also mentioned that its sitting on coilovers, need to sort the ride height as the previous owner had it slammed. I've raised it a bit since then, but even at the height in the pics it catches on bigger speed bumps if you're more than 3 up with some luggage. Perhaps need 5-10mm all round.

To be honest Bork it's hard for both me and Sam to comment on ride comfort as our cars are lowered. In mine you notice bumps but it's not "crashy", Sam's on the other hand...
On a decent length drive its not something I notice enough to worry about, it's way more comfortable than my Seat was, but that's more down to the driving position. Standard ones I imagine will be very plush.

I actually gave it a good polish before these photos, but the paintwork hasn't seen the stuff for time, if at all, so it will need a couple more coats of Autoglym's finest before it's shining properly.
Regarding insurance, my premium is £936 fully comp, age 20 with 2 years no claims. Bit annoyed that I effectively lost half a year of NCB by cancelling my previous policy mid-way through but I had to change companies.

Swapped in a new cabin filter as the old one was well past it's best.

Also wired in the external mic for the head unit and mounted it in one of the switch blanks. Quite pleased with the result, looks a lot better than having it clipped to a sunvisor or mounted on top of the dash. It uses a Parrot system so sound is pretty clear and it's easy to use.

Home from university for Easter now, got a couple more things changed.
OEM Gear knob as it had a horrible MOMO item when I bought the car (it's the little things)

More importantly, facelift headlights, look so much better than the pre-facelift units, require a wiring harness adaptor to fit and a small modification to the wings but it is worth it

Dad's B8 lurking in the background

Other than that, just been enjoying using it really, used £100s worth of fuel in the first week of my Easter break
