Thoughts on a courtesy Boxster
Discussion
GT3 developed an oil leak, so off it went to Porsche Newcastle last week. They lent me a 61 reg PDK Boxster, which I was pleased with as I had to make a trip up to the west of Scotland. First time I'd driven a Boxster or used a PDK style gearbox, so I was curious to see what both would be like. Pretty impressed with the Boxster. Decently quick, fun to drive, with good steering feel. Suspension not too harsh, and very practical. Loads of luggage space. I also liked the engine note, especially on start up and when changing down. Negatives? Dated interior. And having to manually release a catch to drop the hood seemed on a par with wind up windows. And I think the styling needs a strong colour - blue, red, or maybe black or white. But not silver.
Less keen on the PDK box though. In auto mode it changed up too quickly for me, so that I was always 2 or 3 gears higher than I would have wanted to be in a manual. And when you are slowing for a junction or to stop, the downchanges give an uneven feel to your retardation. I stood it on its nose a couple of times during low speed manoeuvring, when I went to put the clutch down and found it was a brake instead.
I thought it was better in manual mode. Quick on the downchange. Approach a roundabout in 5th, on to the brakes, knock it down 3 gears, bit of power and steering, and out the other side thinking "Yep. That was good!" But I'd still have a manual.
Overall though this is a really good car, and I can see why they're popular.

Ive got a 2.9 PDK Boxster for 3 days to go up to Middlesborough for my mates christening before i fly out to Afghan. Hiring it, unlimited mileage for just over £500 and its delivered to my door and picked up. Pretty reasonable i reckon considering im going to put on about 900miles in the 3 days!

Who did you hire it from in the end? I saw the previous post about looking for a company to rent from. All the ones I've seen in London have very low mileage limits.Gassing Station | Porsche General | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
