Well my Chim let me down today - the first time in two years it has missed a beat.

About fiftten minutes after a cold start, the engine just died at 40 mph with no warning. Turned the key to restart, no fuel pump noise. Aha! thinks I, must be the pump. Pushed the car, with assistance from a passer-by, into a layby and explained this to my helper. "Must be pump or relay" said I. "Listen, when you turn the key you should hear the pump running". Turns key, sound of pump running! Engine then restarts. Drove home without further incident.

So, I now have a car that's apparently running fine but a big worry about unreliability. I'm just wondering what to check/replace to cure it.

Fuel pump?
Fuel Pump relay?
Immobiliser?

Any ideas or advice very welcome!

Immobiliser I would say had mine do the same mid overtake on a country road, that was 7 years ago when i dicided to bypass it. To start mine you have to press that button and while holding down that pedal !

Get a replacement fuel pump relay which can also be used to replace the main relay which would also give you the same symptoms as they are latched.

Symptoms:

Ignition on, no pump prime but ICV can be heard working when ignition turned off could be the pump relay, pump or fuse.

Ignition on no pump prime and no ICV noise could be the main relay or fuse.

The META M99T immobiliser on mine. Bridged the ignition out. No further problems. Will be fitting a hot start relay soon to protect the starter solenoid. Correct David.
