Hi, just wondering if anyone else has made the change from Pirelli P Zero Corsa's to Michelin PS2's and can confirm if there is a noticeable difference or if I just need to give my head a shake? biggrin

I just got four PS2's fitted to my 997.1 GT3 RS and can't believe the difference. At first I thought they maybe needed a few miles to scrub them in but that's now been 250 miles and I'm still not happy with them.

Basically, when going into a corner with the Corsa's the car turned without any drama, now I turn in and it almost feels as if the tyres roll sideways a bit then grips! In a straight line when I've gave it some beans and have just changed into 3rd it almost feels floaty. I checked the tyre pressures and the garage had set them at 34 psi front / 38 psi rear so I reduced them to 29 psi front / 33 psi rear as per the manual but it still feels the same.

Is this normal and is it just because the Corsa's were a much stiffer side walled tyre?

Cheers,
Martin

So many variables it's impossible to say that the same tyre is best for any car once you lose the factory fresh settings. The main difference you are feeling I would suspect is simply moving from a worn set of tyres to a new set. Added to possibly geometry issues and ever decreasing, albeit tiny amounts, performance in your shocks, and things become tricky to diagnose. However, if you simply don't like them then you should change them; without confidence in your tyres the whole driving experience is marred. Good luck!

Thanks Rog,

The thing is the geo was just checked / set up about 3 months ago so I'm hoping that nothing much should have changed there. As for the shocks I don't think they're the cause; it's a 1hr drive on a fairly twisty road to get to my OPC and on the way there I was just thinking about how good the car was to drive (had been away working abroad for 4 weeks) , on the way back the difference was really noticeable. The thing is I'm not one of these people that could say I would feel the difference if I fitted say an Akrapovic exhaust and lost 15kg or whatever off the rear of the car but I really noticed the difference with the tyres.

Hopefully it is due to the big difference in tread depth (my Corsa's were down to about 2mm) and once I get used to them it will be fine because as it stands I'm looking to change them toute suite once Pirelli get their finger out and get more Corsa's made.

Cheers,
Martin

The Corsa system is a semi slick like the Toyo 888 or PS Cup.

The PS2 is a roadgoing tyre --- better in the wet, significantly poorer in the dry.

I am wondering about the new Michelin Supersports for a road car ?

I usually run Michelin Cups too on my 997.1RS. The only reason why I have PS2s on is for winter road driving: I think for rain/snow they do an amazing job.

But as soon as it's dry again I'll be switching back to Cups...and keep the remaining PS2s for next winter.

On track they heat up too quickly are wear out rapidely unlike Cups...but like I said I don't think PS2s were designed with "track" work in mind.

I think it's hard to compare both as they clearly were not designed with the same optic in mind: track vs. road use

PS2s will simply not perform like Corsas. Put the pressures back to 32 front/38 rear or they will just roll over the shoulders and wear out at an accelerated rate. Much better than cups in the rain, but they will overheat within 15 minutes on a dry track (even at stable pressures) if you know what you are doing. An excellent normal road tyre, but they are not stiff walled racing compound tyres like Corsas or cups, so don't expect that kind of behaviour from them.

IMHO corsas are the best performance road tyre you can get at the moment, PS2 are a solid all weather road tyre (prob my favourite).
There's no comparison between the two other than they are black and round so you can't expect anywhere near the same levels from each.

By all accounts the tyre to have. Plenty of people are waiting on an N rating for their warranties (there are many threads), but if that isn't you - buy them is the word out there. If Pirelli wanted your business there wouldn't have been the availability issues plaguing Corsas for the last 3 years... As a supplier they really are fking hopeless, even though the product is excellent.

Thanks for the replies guy's.

I didn't expect them to be nearly as good as the Corsas on track but was just shocked at the difference on the road without even pushing on.

I did want the Pilot Super Sports but my OPC weren't having any of it even though I tried the "they're being used at Silverstone, new turbos come with them etc" so decided to go with the PS2's to keep my warranty. I didn't even think about the Pilot Sport Cups but with the weather up in NE Scotland probably best not to smile

I'm hoping the MPSS are N rated come summer and I can swap and just keep the PS2's as a winter tyre, failing that I'll put my Corsa's back on for a planned October Ring/Spa trip, 2.5mm should hopefully get me from Scotland to Germany / Belgium and back smile

Cheers,
Martin

Among the current N-rated tyres, which ones are the best without going to a track compound?

There seem to be
PZeros (the new ones with a wavy groove pattern)
Michelin PS2s
Bridgestones?
Continentals?

Sad that an OPC tells you what to do with "your" car - sad and ridiculous IMO

Supersports are where its at, new tech, best bits of the Cups but with 300 wear rating and wet weather usability. 325/30 size is not even available in Europe but got mine shipped from US (where I understand they are manufactured).

To be fair to my OPC they do seem to go out of their way to help and I've never had any issues with them. Would be nice though if there was another one less than 4 hours away to at least play them off against smile

Could have been desperation on my part but I'm sure there was a thread about this a few months back?

Agreed, bloody annoying and if I didn't want the warranty I would have went for the Supersports. I did think about keeping a rainy weather fund instead of the warranty but didn't think this would cover should something big go bang smile

Get another set of lighter wheels, OZ Ultras or similar wearing the MSSs, enjoy the better drive and safer handling then swap back to the stty Porsche OEM stuff when you have to visit the stealer ?
