Am I better off going M1 or A1?
I know there are some roadworks on the M1 with average speed cameras, but can't remember where they start and couldn't find it after a quick Google!

I'd probably go A1 as the 50 zone is from around Luton up to Bedford (probs further South than that to be honest!)
And you always get bods crashing near Luton anyway.

Or, looking at google maps, M1 until just before Luton, then A6 all the way to Bedford?
Does the A6 have many speed limited or single lane stretches, or is it sufficiently fast?

The A1 is a better bet. If you're coming from the M25 anticlockwise, just go up the A1 at South Mimms. If you're going clockwise on the M25, take Junction 21A (Signposted as "M1 South" and "St Albans" I believe), go up the A405, then the A414 to the A1. You'll cut the corner off, avoid the M25 roadwork 50 zone, and be dropped onto the A1 right before a tunnel.

If you're coming from far enough east it might be worth going up the M11 instead, leaving it as Bishop's Stortford, taking the A10 across to the A10, going up there until Buntingford, then taking the sublime A507 across to Baldock. Then either go up the A1 from there or take the A507 along to Shefford, then go along the A600 (either all the way to Bedford) or divert off of it at the B656 (first roundabout along the A600), turn left as soon as you come off the roundabout, then go along there, through Ireland, follow the signs to Old Warden, then head along to Cardington along Southill Road...

Sadly I'm not too hot on the A6, I never drive it (last time I drove it was probably about a year ago)! I'll ask someone who does with regards to how the road flows and so on...

Lots of speed cameras on the A6 between Clophill and Bedford.

I'd take the A1 and second the Cardington suggestion, used to be a regular thrash home from work route that!
